I remember 2008. The summer. Gas prices were nearing the $5 a gallon range, people were selling their gas sucking pigs of cars, and everybody was concerned about oil prices....until they fell again, then everybody continued on as if nothing had ever gone wrong. This song is about peak oil, and how silly it is for people to continue on a path of destruction for lifestyle that is doomed. I tried to do a Beach Boys thing here, since they wrote songs about cars and such.

Two songs dealing with substance abuse and my own personal hypocrisy with it. Utility Pole assumes an elitist attitude that there is something wrong with drinking beer and smoking pot, but drinking bourbon is all right. Mr. Lester is about the people you meet while drinking, who become a nuisance, but fun to drink with nonetheless. I really like the guitar solos in these songs, if I do say so myself.

Well, that's it. That's what I've been up to lately. I wonder if there are still some of the old friends around, people that I've known only through this medium for lo, these many years. What's Missing From This Picture?

A member over at Huffington Post commenting on this article pointed out that in the above picture, Ron Paul was the only one not wearing a red tie. But I noticed something else missing. Something obsequious during the last presidential election cycle, something that was an issue in certain cases.
Of course, I'm talking about the flag lapel pin that every politician wore to show people that ~~he was his own man and didn't bow to any pressure~~ they were a real American. Don't get them, wrong, the Republicans are still trying to sell themselves to voters as the party of America, Ronald Reagan, Jesus Christ and working people. Well, their definition of "working" people may differ from mine of yours, what we call workers, they refer to as "whiners", lousy ingrates who work long hours for less than a living wage and want the government to enforce job killing safety regulations.
No, their definition of "producers" are the bean counting misanthropes who try to squeeze every drop of sweat from those whiners while trying to squeeze every last dime out of consumers. And if the government would just let them privatize everything, we'd all be better off because more of us would have jobs hauling these 'producer's' big bags of money back to the panic room of their McMansion in a gated community. Hooray. Yippee.
So the GOP is trying to sell itself as the party of change-remember when they mocked candidate Barack Obama for that whole "hope-y change-y thing"? No lapel pins, vote for change, it sounds like the GOP is trying to morph itself into a whiter, older, and meaner version of Our President. The only thing that might possibly stand in their way is the next two years of Republican obstructionism in the House of Representatives, which will remind people of what they really stand for, which is rich people getting richer while government services to the victims of their economic policies are removed. None of this will create jobs, but it will continue the Middle Class removal program started under the Reagan years.

Today marks what would have been Ronald Reagan's 100 birthday, and were he alive today, he probably wouldn't remember it. Just like he could barely remember being president. Or the many crimes committed by his staff while he napped or vacationed playing cowboy.
You can hardly blame right wingers for admiring a man who was basically a puppet for corporate interests, conveniently forgetting that he raised taxes and tripled the National Debt. These people are the same people who call Mubarak a good friend because he helps us out when we need to send alleged terrorists to be tortured for crimes they may have not committed, but give them a while and they'll be having them admit they like to wear women's panties.
But mostly, right wingers adore Reagan because he was the first president of the Corporate Idiocracy. His anal raping of Patco sent a message to all working people: don't stand in the way of obscene corporate profits.CEO compensation has gone up 500 times since Reagan while worker's pay has stagnated as costs have gone up. And why have costs risen so dramatically? Because CEOs want more money!
The Corporate idiocracy also applauds Reagan for bringing down communism, which means that communism does work, and must be undermined because it runs contrary to corporate interests. His administration also committed crimes such as the Iran/Contra affair, which sent weapons (illegally) to Iran, with the funds be used to buy weapons (illegally) for Central American right wing death squads. Reagan also helped create the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden, becoming responsible then for 9/11.
So as the corporate media spend the day today in revisionist history lies about the worst president until George W Bush, remember the truth. Because Reagan certainly couldn't!

The End Of The World As They Know It

The world is imperfect. There are many problems facing mankind each day, each one, created, by mankind itself. Someday, maybe sooner, but probably later, when the Sun goes supernova, I'm sure everything on this planet will be obliterated. The point is, we all have to die sometime, and all we can do about is nothing. Live your life and try to leave some good behind.
Or.....
Or you can scan some book of fables and myths, parables designed to impart some ancient knowledge for some clue, any clue, until you create in your mind that the world will end on May 21 2011. Then you can spend your remaining days in bliss, spreading your message while trying not to appear as a total nutjob, warning people that indeed their days are numbered. But what happens on May 22?
Jesus predicted to his followers he would return in their lifetime ( Matthew 16:28) and that never happened. In fact, the list of claims of Jesus' return and end the world is fairly long. The Heaven's Gate cult is another prime example of people who believed in the end of the world. In fact, most major religions have these end-of-the-world fantasies where their people are spared the agony of death by the trueness of their belief system.
My point is this: if there are people who are willing to believe that the world will end soon, then they have no stock in dealing with the real problems facing us now. Therefore, any Christian extremist should not be elected to public office, because their belief system is based on some invisible guy in the sky scooping them up up and away from the consequences of their actions. The world belongs to the non-believers. We're certainly not the ones screwing it up.

The Free Market Jesus

Once upon a time, a young couple, Joseph and Mary were to travel to Joseph's hometown of Bethlehem, PA for the Census. Because every one else had to travel to their ancestral cities, it meant that there were many travelers, which, because of the law of supply and demand, meant that more people needed to use fuel then was readily available, due to a short supply created by oil companies shutting down refineries, which caused fuel prices to rise dramatically. Joseph, who was a carpenter, was suffering because his cross-making business had been hit with a cease and desist order, because the crosses he built were of design deemed the intellectual property of General Cross-manics, and was forced to pay most of his wages to them for use of their cross design. This meant that he and his wife, who, unbeknownst to him was carrying a child, had very little to travel on.
When they reached Bethlehem, they found that most hotels, motels and inns were filled up, and the ones that had vacancies, were charging much more money than Joseph had left after paying so much for gas, because demand for rooms were up, while the supply of available rooms was dwindling. While stopping at a local tavern, Joseph told his tale to a local bartender, who said he used to have a garage out back they could use, but had sold it because real estate prices had gone up so much, he was losing money using it to park his motorcycle. However, when he found that Mary was with child, he did offer them a spot in the fenced-in area around his garbage dumpster.
While setting up in the area around the dumpster, Mary informed Joseph that her baby was on the way, so Joseph went back and asked the barkeep where the nearest hospital was, but the barkeep informed Joseph that his wife could not be admitted with out any proof of health insurance, which as a self-employed contractor, Joseph did not have.
Meanwhile, a patron at the bar, called the local news station, which sent out a camera crew to film the miracle about to happen in the area around the dumpster behind the bar. The story was then beamed up to a satellite which spread this heartwarming story around the world. Soon, three agents from the East showed up w with much gold for Mary and Joseph if they would sign a contract to endorse their clients' frankincense and myrrh.
The gold rolled in as long as their baby, Jesus, which they had named after the barkeep, was small and cute, but as soon as grew up and became an awkward adolescent, he joined his father in his father's cross making business. Later, as a juvenile delinquent, he got in trouble smashing up an ATM outside his father's temple, and for turning water into wine, putting him in direct competition with the winery that contributed to the governor's campaign fund.
Centuries later, people everywhere celebrated this pseudo miraculous event, by spending too much money, trampling over each other to get the best bargains, and helping multi-nationals bottom line. The end.

As this congress session draws to a close, another congress is chomping at the bit to set their agenda based on a mandate they feel they have from all the lunatics who were crazy enough to vote for them. And just how crazy are they? Bull goose loony squared is an apt description.
Take Tea Party nation founder Judson Phillips. He wants to get rid of the Methodist Church because they preach that togetherness, and understanding peace and other hippie crap espoused by Jesus, instead of twisting his words to suit their own selfish agenda. Feed the poor? No way! Make them work two or three part time jobs instead.
Not to be outdone, Rep. Peter King has decided he wants to hold hearings on radical Muslims. Because you can never persecute them enough. I thought the Republicans were about saving the tax payer's money, but there's always room in the budget for a little fear mongering, especially with a presidential election not too far away.
Yes, it's hunting season again, and the GOP has set it's sights on finishing the job they started in 2000: getting Americans to vote against their own interests by keeping them in fear of, well, everything different. Especially those which threaten threaten the thing unique to white people.

Cornered By Your Rhetoric And Your Zealotry

2012 GOP presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin are roundly criticizing the Obama administration over the embarrassing dump (as in shit) from Wikileaks. Palin says we should hunt Julian Assange with "the same urgency we pursue AlQaeda and Taliban leaders". Given that we can hardly identify Taliban leaders, and that the most visible people claiming to be Al Qaeda are still around (and, still Americans), one can hope that they'll put a little more effort in to their hunting.
Mike Huckabee, in an attempt to appear more butch than the Moose Killa of Wasilla has stated that "anything less than execution is too kind a penalty". Huckabee feels that leaking information that puts people at risk is treason, it's just kind of funny he wasn't this angry during the "Scooter" Libby trial.
So it's interesting to note that while both Huckabee as well as Palin both are pro-Zionists that they would take such a harsh view.
Former Carter administration national Security Adviser Zbiginiew Brzeznski states that "It's a question of whether Wikileaks are being manipulated by interested parties that want to complicate our relationships with other governments, or undermine some governments, because some of these items that are being emphasized or have surfaced are very pointed.
"And I wonder if, in fact, there aren't some operations internationally, intelligence services that are feeding information to Wikileaks because it is a unique opportunity to embarrass us, to embarrass our positions but also to undermine our relationships with other governments".
Hmmmm. Other intelligence services, I wonder who could he mean? Perhaps, Israel? Will the harsh rhetoric still stand then? I think not. Because what you get with these people are politicians whose belief system requires them to put America second. And we need leaders who'll put America first.

Bringing Teh Crazy To A Whole New (Local) Level

I might be giving the Tea Baggers a little more credit than they deserve, but I think they actually learned something from this past election. After winning only 32% of the elections, mostly in smaller jurisdictional races, as opposed to statewide Senate races, they've decided to think smaller. How small? They now are turning their attention towards local school board elections. This is not surprising from a group that considers President Obama an elitist for having, you know, an education, but the scary part is that their intent is cutting spending where it already has bee cut too much: education.
We can only hope they'll rein in pointless spending, like in Texas, where old text books are being replaced with ones that espouse a conservative point of view at a cost of $1.9 billion. Because while one can put a price on education, indoctrination is a different story.
Another part of the plan is the continued union busting, because apparently uniting together is good for some Americans, when workers do it, suddenly it's socialism.
So while Lockheed Martin, or KBR,orHalliburton can take advantage of the self-perpetuating war on "terror", it's those damned elitist teachers who are demanding a living wage that are ruining this country.

How Many More Times Do I Have To Say It Again?

As my few remaining loyal readers may have noticed, I haven't been as avid about posting here as I have been in the past. While this is partly due to other outstanding obligations, the main reason is I've said it already. Several times.
How many more times do I have to post about the Republican Party being tools, as well as the tool of capitalistic oppression? They seem to revel in finding new ways to keep government out of business while simultaneously finding ways to pass laws aimed to harm the poor, minorities, or gays and lesbians. I've said it before, and while I find the lot of them to be distasteful, saying it again won't change them.
How many more times do I have to criticize the Democratic Party? Their misguided attempts to solve any problem are tempered with their liberal sense of all-inclusion made sure that health care reform didn't offend the insurance companies, making it a mandated pay out for them, and another tax that working families can't afford. Good work.
How many more times do I have to point out that the reason the economy is in the toilet is because our politicians and their corporate overlords thought it would be best to ship all our high paying manufacturing jobs outside of the country? You can pour as many billions of dollars down a sinkhole as you want, if they're not creating permanent full time positions, than the industries hurt by the down turn, housing and automobile manufacturing, will never recover because people are not going to commit to a thirty year mortgage or a three year car loan if they're only guaranteed employment for nine months. Do I have to say it again?
How many more times do I have to point out the futility of fighting a war against an idea? Terrorism is nothing more than a small group of people's response to a greater group of people's injustice against them. Endless and self-perpetuating, every unmanned drone the US sends into Pakistan that kills unarmed civilians, 'collateral damage' as we justified these acts of murder, creates more desperate people who are so determined they will gladly risk life and limb to strike back at us as hard as possible. Do I have to say it again?
I started this blog over five years ago because I didn't want the only opportunity for my children is to become cannon fodder for a privileged class that has no qualms with using lies and deception to send them off to kill and die. There were no WMD in Iraq. Do I have to say it again? There is now, and they belong to the US Army.
I don't plan on gong away. A number of good blogging friends have hung up their keyboards this year, but I intend on continuing to exercise my futility. No matter how many more times I have to say it. Again.

No, I Didn't Vote

That's right, I didn't vote. I refused to participate in the Corporate Idiocracy charade of the-lesser-of-two evils where either side argues about which side is better like a couple of High School students debating the merits of one mass produced beer over the other. I looked at both sides of the coin and decided that beyond the empty platitudes launched to entice me to spend my one vote on them, there wasn't really any difference.
Maybe I've been burned before. I remember voting Democratic in 2006, on the hope that they would bring about an end to the wars in the Middle East. Nope. Didn't happen. Maybe they'd hold the incumbent administration responsible for acts of malfeasance perpetrated by those at the highest level. Instead, almost immediately, impeachment was taken off the table.
In that time, despite their general incompetence at being able to accomplish anything beyond deciding the best way to repair our health care system was to tax my work-related health benefits as income. Huh? Leadership? No, just mindless water-treading, pretending to serve people like me while assuming the position for their corporate masters.
And speaking of being one of me (of which there is only), who do the Republicans think they're fooling. I'm not a soulless money grubbing thick-headed Islamophobe who thinks the world would be a better place if we enslaved everybody under the capitalist system. I do not drive my gas guzzling Sport Utility Behemoth to an energy inefficient McMansion in a gated community in the suburbs. I work a cruddy job for crappy pay and am happy about it because the alternative is giving my soul to a corporation that would gladly chop me off at the knees if it meant another thousand bucks in that year end bonus for the people at the top.
I don't care if some sport team from a college I never attended makes the play-offs, how cute Bristol Palin is on Dancing With The Stars, or the latest patented "outrageous" outfit worn by Lady Gaga to obscure the fact that her music is pedestrian and ordinary. Don't lump me in with you. Please.
So, I didn't vote, and looking at the latest returns, there wasn't one candidate I may possibly could have hoped to maybe win that lost by one vote. And before you tell me that if more people who didn't vote had gone out and made the effort, it could have changed the outcome, I say if more people would ween themselves from the Republican/Democratic Corporate Axis Of Evil, we could have one great country.
So you can go ahead and con yourself into thinking that you're "trying to make difference" by aiding and abetting the status quo, but the truth is as long as we keep enabling the Corporate Idiocracy, the longer we all will have to suffer.

You And Your Elitist Friends

On Facebook, my brother posted a link to this article dealing with the current trend among Tea Baggers and fellow travelers to refer to the people on the left as "elitist". One of the many dictionaries I have (actually, the closest one to my computer) defines an elitist as one who believes in rule by a small and privileged group. Since the Democrats currently hold majorities in both houses of congress as well as the White House, I guess the small group who wishes to rule are the Republicans. So who is the elitist?
If you believe in American Exceptionalism, the notion that 5% of the world's population can tell the rest of the world where to get off,or should be able to assassinate anyone it wishes, you might be an elitist.
If you think that 'some people are just born to be slaves, you might be an elitist. If you think public employees shouldn't be allowed to vote, you might be an elitist.
There it is. Using the proven Rovian tactic of attacking your opponent on your own weaknesses, the right is accusing the left of being exactly what they're guilty of doing. Equity and fairness is not elitist, but a select few deciding to abolish the minimum wage appears to be. And so is a select group of businesspeople pooling their resources to put 1.4 million people out of work.
So remember when you hear the GOP and Tea Party (one and the same, I know) about "liberal elitism", just remember, it's just petty jealousy. There's a group that these people will never belong to.
It's called humanity.

The Lopsided Foreign Policy Of The Corporate Idiocracy

Consistency has never been a key factor in US foreign policy. It doesn't matter if there's a Democratic president, or a Republican one, the double standard employed by both always been the same.
Take today, as an instance. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced sanctions against eight Iranian officials for human rights violation following a crackdown on protesters after last year's elections. On the surface it sounds good, not just more posturing designed to soften the television watchers up for an attack on Iran.
In the meantime, the UNHRC says Israel used incredible violence against a Gaza Aid flotillaviolated international law by storming the flotilla and killing nine human beings, including an American in execution-style killings, and what does our country do? It criticizes the report as 'unbalanced'. The truth is, the only thing unbalanced is our foreign policy, which seeks to condemn one act of brutality, while defending another.
Now one case is set to go to the International Criminal Court, which the US opposes, mainly because between Iraq, Afghanistan, and the crackdown on the Gaza strip, American-Israeli exceptionalism rules the day. We can torture, kill, and maim whom ever we so please, as we are better than the people living over all those preciou natural resources the Corporate Idiocracy needs to keep it's followers happy and buying more useless things, giving up their time and money to make the incredibly wealthy, more incredibly wealthier.
I don't suspect this will end anytime too soon.

Remember when we all voted for change, because we felt the country was going down a dangerous path towards dictatorship,and someone needed to put a stop to it? Then we all hoped that by putting the Democratic Party in charge that they would do what they were elected to do?
Boy, were we suckers.
Because, once again, as we did seven years ago, we have FBI agents raiding the homes of antiwar activists. You know, the protesters the media completely ignored? Someone was listening, Big Brother.
Speaking of change, wasn't President Obama going to bring an end to the war in Iraq? Yeah, right. And antiwar activists are giving material support to the enemy. Sounds like something out of the Bush administration, but no, it's an ongoing policy.
The Democratic Party is concerned of losing seats in congress to the G-O-Tea Party. Instead of standing up for real progressive issues, and ending the insanity that is the War Party, they choose instead to continue on with it, lest they be seen as weak. But by doing so, they are weak, afraid to stand up to the minority party, and not doing a lot to compel those people who might vote for them to leave their houses and, well, vote for them. Sure, losing the House may help Obama in 2012, but what about helping us, now? Be the Change. It why you were elected.

Republicans seem to think this midterm election will be a cake walk, that they'll end up with the control of Congress, giving them ample opportunity to continue their obstructionist policies. But I don't think so. Why? Because instead of offering answers and solutions to the myriad problems facing this country, the emperor wannabes new clothes are steaming hot piles of insanity.
First up is the insanity intern and future Palin hopeful Christine O'Donnell, who was revealed to have dabbled in satanism as a teenager, by her own words forcing her to cancel her appearances on the Sunday Morning Talking Heads New Shows on CBS and even Fox. You know when a Republican cancels a chance to knock softball questions out of the park on the media arm of the GOP, something is up, and that something is teh crazy.
Next at bat in the bat-shit crazy line-up is, no, not bat-shit crazy Michelle Bachmann, but the Montana Republican party which, in a moment of pure unenlightened unenlightenment have decided to adding homosexuality as a crime to their party's platform this year. It takes some severe homophobia to want to lock gays away, where you wouldn't be tempted to want to join them. Why else put them in jail, because what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes is something Republicans say that the government should stay out of, right?
And from homophobia, we cross the crazy trail to the phobia du jour of the conservative regressives-Islamophobia! Failed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is proposing a law to ban Sharia Law's use by judges in deciding cases. First off, you should have done that when you were, you know, an actual member of congress, doofus, and not now when it does no good but stokes the fires of a thousand burning Korans. Secondly, we already have that in our constitution, it's called the Establishment Clause, and it bars any decision made based on Sharia Law, Biblical law, Judaic Law, or any other law emanating from some all powerful invisible being who doesn't exist. All this does is play into the ignorance of haters who think that Muslims are taking over the country, and that our president is one of them. And that is the Republican plan. No policies. No solutions. Just pure unadulterated hate. And not a hate based on reality, but an unfounded hate based on insecurity. That is pure paranoia. Which is nothin' but teh crazy!

Ever march against BP? Carry misspelled signs at a Tea Party rally? Ever stand up for LGBT rights? Well, according to Homeland Security, you might be a terrorist! You're either for us or against us, and if you're protesting us, you must be against us, and if you're against us, you might be a low level terrorist, or so goes the specious reasoning of the lovely folks at the Pentagon.
So while corporations are able to avoid the scrutiny of the Patriot Act when it comes to it's wheelings and dealings because they are a matter of national security, you're on a no-fly list because air marshals have a quota to fill in order to get raises, bonuses, awards and special assignments.
Got it yet? It doesn't matter if we have a Republican controlled congress, or a Democratic. Corporations own the politicians; we just pay their salary. That's why you probably won't get a tax cut, but the Bush tax cuts will likely become permanent. And if you don't like, be careful who you tell it to, lest ye become labeled a terrorist.

High Fructose Corn Syrup By Any Other Name Would Still Be Too Sweet

I've been eating a healthier diet lately, becoming more vigilant about what I put in my body. You can often find me at the grocery store, reading labels of processed foods, trying to avoid additives and sweeteners that aren't good for my body. One of the most dangerous of these is high fructose corn syrup, which your body processes in different ways than regular cane or beet sugar, which in turn alters the way metabolic-regulating hormones function. It also feeds cancer cells.
So, being a prudent shopper, I should have the right to decide what I ingest, right? Not if the high fructose corn syrup industry has it's way.
Now they want to change the food label for high fructose corn syrup to the more pleasing 'corn sugar'. Why? because consumption of high fructose corn syrup in the US market has fallen 21 percent in the last ten years as more and more consumers are avoiding it in the diet. Even First Lady Michelle Obama says she doesn't want her daughters eating food with it in it's ingredients. Meanwhile, the industry has opened up new markets in Mexico and other emerging economies.

Yesterday was the ninth anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, and while there were a number events to commemorate that day, and to honor those who lost their lives so that the Corporate Idiocracy could engage in endless wars to secure it's energy needs until the world runs out of oil, none were more obviously selling the cover story than Michelle Obama and Laura Bush honoring the 'heroes' of Flight 93.
The official story is that passengers on that fateful flight overtook their ~~MossadBlack OpsArabIraqi?~~Al Qaeda! hijackers and forced them to crash into a field in Pennsylvania. But not according to Donald Rumsfeld who stated that Flight 93 was shot down by US fighter jets, which is supported by an examination of the crash site.
Now I'm not suggesting their either of the First Ladies know anything about this, or were anyway involved in a cover-up. I'm just cynical about anything that concerns the 'official' conspiracy of 9/11.
But not that I expect anyone else to be cynical. If you think that an administration that was dishonest in Florida in 2000,and lied about Iraq's WMD is being honest to you about the events of 9/11, I understand. If you think a steel frame building can be brought down by mere kerosene( the most of which burned off in the initial explosion following the crash), good for you! Just don't expect me to go all rubbery when ever some one chokes out 'hero' in a story that basic facts do not support. No matter which side of the corporate idiocracy you bring out to sell it to me.

Abe Lincoln Would Not Be Proud

The GOP for years had portrayed itself as the party of Abraham Lincoln, author of the Emancipation Proclamation. But ever since they decided to instead be the party of Reagan (whom himself was no friend to the working man), things have changed. And that's something to remember this Labor Day.
Especially when a person charged in the largest human trafficking case in US history,(that's slavery to you and I) one Mordechai Orian was also a major contributor to the Republican Party between 2004 and 2006. Curiously enough, that's when the GOP was pushing their"guest worker program".
Now I'm sure the corporate idiocracy would love to import as much slave, er, I mean, cheap labor as possible. It doesn't improve anything but the bottom line, since CEOs of the 50 firms that have laid off the most employees since the economic crisis began took home 42% more pay. Imagine how much more they could make if they didn't have to pay their remaining employees anything! Of course, that being the case, they would eventually lose their jobs because no one would be able to buy their products, but when you make $50 million in one year, how much longer do you need to work anyway.
So their you have it. So while you're out celebrating the murder of labor organizers by US marshals by grilling a steak from a non-union slaughterhouse, remember that while neither party seems too interested in watching your back, the GOP is even less likely to be concerned about your human rights as well.

Another Looney Tunes Throws Their Hat In The Ring

What wears glasses, is known for it's mustache, and isn't averse to throwing their hat in to the ring for the Republican nomination in the 2012 campaign? No, it's not Sarah Palin (electrolysis helped with the facial hair), it's former Bush administration UN ambassador John Bolton.
This is the guy who deemed it perfectly alright for Israel to bomb Iran for it's peaceful development of nuclear energy. What a great president he'd make.
Bolton, who was a recess appointment who resigned after his term was up because he could never get confirmation for the position, is one of many neocons within the Bush administration, although he deplores the term neocon and prefers to be called a "bull-goose loony never nude chicken hawk", not because he, like so many other members of the Bush administration, avoided serving during the Vietnam War which he supported, but because he has a predilection for young boys.
Bolton's one major drawback is that he doesn't have the name recognition of a Romney, Pawlenty, or Huckabee, and people often confuse him with histrionic eighties singer Michael Bolton. Although, like many Republicans who have lost or quit their government jobs, he is an analyst on the Fox News Network. And many people who see his picture often mistake him for Yosemite Sam, especially when he's brandishing his handguns and shooting them in the air while shouting "Yahoo! There's black gold in them thar Middle East countries!"
Of course the 2012 field is filling up fast with failures and quitters such as Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, and a host of other presidential hopefuls, who, like Bolton, don't really have a plan as much as they know they don't like what passes for a plan from President Obama. So we can all look forward to them criticizing the current system while carefully alluding to "change".

That annoying squeaky voice. That smug self-satisfied delivery. That errant speech pattern. The complete disconnection from the truth. No, I'm not talking about Glenn Beck, but Sarah Palin who said at the "Restoring Honor" rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, activists must honor King's legacy by paying tribute to the men and women who protect America in uniform.
Huh? That don't make no sense!
You see, Dr. King opposed the Viet Nam War, as well as imperialistic US military action that diverted money and attention from domestic programs created to aid the poor blacks. Civil rights and antiwar are King's true legacy, not the celebration of the neocons imperialistic aim to inflict US based global hegemony.
In fact, it was that opposition to capitalism that led to his assassination by a conspiracy that included agencies of the US government. But Palin would never read that in the history books of the corporate idiocracy. Those tell us Dr. King was a great man, without detailing too much what he was really about, since economic, social and racial equality makes some people nervous.
And since were on the subject, how are our 'men and women who protect America in uniform' (shouldn't that be 'our men and women in uniform who protect America'?) restoring honor to our country? Neither the 34,000 civilians deaths inAfghanistan nor the 1,366,350 civilian deaths in Iraq were any sort of threat to our country. And their deaths have done nothing to 'restore America's honor', in fact, it's just the opposite. And how are they any different than the 'honor killings' alleged to by professional Islamophobe Pamela Geller?
Restoring America's Honor and honoring Dr. King's legacy would be easy. All it would take is a slight shift in our foreign policy. But getting a couple of thousand television watchers off their couch is a good start.

Face it. While the right wing has been demonizing Islam and branding it as a cruel religion, the truth is all religion is cruel, barbaric, and just plain wrong when it's extreme (as in extremely conservative).
Here in the US, extremism takes another shape. I speak, of course, of the political religious zealotry of Sharron Angle. Known in progressive circles for spewing the fear mongering rhetoric of the right, Angle now claims there are domestic enemies in Congress, a claim she twice refused to disavow. Sure there are, Ms. Angle, they're called lobbyists. People to whom money is speech and corporations are people, their agenda is to tilt our system away from the will of the people and towards the will of the Multi-Nationals.
These are not the enemies of which Ms. Angle spoke, obviously. Unaware of the 14 characteristics of fascism, she is proving ample distraction for those whose loyalties lie not with a country, but with it's capital, taking as much as they can for themselves while left and right rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.The second Great Depression is upon us and even a college degree doesn't guarantee a good job.
So you could take Ms. Angle's paranoid delusions at face value, and believe she must have stopped taking her meds, or just conclude that she's just another rodeo clown, distracting bullish Americans from the corporate cowboys who are riding us until we are broken.

The other day on the way home from work I was passed by a car sporting the old "I Don't Believe The Liberal Media" bumper sticker. I chuckled to myself at the cluelessness of this driver for believing that the corporate media is liberal or, with the exception of FOX NEWS, conservative. What we have is the All-Anxiety American Media, all anxiety, all the time, designed not to enlighten and inform, but rather to keep viewers in a constant state of anxiety, crying wolf, as it were, about things they are ultimately powerless to end.
A prime recent example of this is the "ground zero" mosque controversy, manufactured, for sure, but in the end neither opponents nor defenders have any real power to make a difference. The die has been cast and while people browbeat each other over religious freedom and security issues, I'm sure somewhere they have already forgotten all the other things they threw at you to keep you reaching for your Xanax.
As an example, we were warned of the imminent end of the world when Iran acquired nuclear power, yet they launched their first nuclear power plant, and everybody's okay, except for this guy.
Today I caught a glimpse of a story on the Internet Bin Laden, the next in a long line of Boogeymen that the Anxiety News Cycle has to shake at you once you realize that the real Osama Bin Laden is dead. Once you have nothing to fear, there is nothing to keep you tuned into the news to see how to protect your family and yourself, and every viewer lost is a loss of revenue for them. The meat on that dead horse must be really tender they way they've been flogging it. It's no wonder alleged 'patriots' across the country are protesting the building of new mosques, or that in a desperate move, the RNC sent a tweet saying Obama has confessed to being a Muslim. Fear sells, but what's really scare is the type of people who are buying it.

With the Gulf of Mexico an ecological nightmare, the economic recovery not going as planned, and the US mired in not one but two endless wars, you'd think there'd be plenty of ammunition for an opposition party to run against the Democratic Party, wouldn't you?
These are real problems, problems that affect every American in one form or another, and yet to listen to the GOP, you'd almost think these problems are either non-existent, or not really problems at all. And what are our problems?
Muslims. Muslims exercising their freedom of religion.
As an example the number of television watchers who think President Obama is a Muslim has doubled. The most confused group is of course, Republicans. And it doesn't help matters when you have some Dick claiming that the "Ground Zero" Mosque will be used to train terrorists on Fox News, that beacon of rationality. Didn't the GOP from the last election cycle that a noun, a verb and 9/11 didn't work for Rudy Ghouliani, do they think it will work again?
All this manufactured hysteria is part of the corporate idiocracy's plan to distract television watchers from the simple fact that people are still losing jobs, and the Republicans and Democrats aren't doing anything to stop it.

Ever wonder why, even with majorities in both houses of Congress, that the Democratic Party has been so ineffective in it's attempts to pass legislation?
Look no farther than the Senate Majority "Leader" Harry Reid, who when pressed on the "Ground Zero" Mosque, proved he's a spineless wimp able to be bullied by the likes of Sharron Angle.
Now, I understand, as a politician, there are times when it's wise to break away from the pack and stand up for what is right. This is not one of those times, unfortunately.
Sure, a majority of American television watchers oppose the plans to build a mosque six blocks away from the former site of the World Trade Center, but many Americans, after being fed a steady diet of misinformation about Saddam Hussein most Americans supported that crazy and illegal pre-emptive strike as well. All this means is that given the choice between rational thought and panic driven emotional overreaction that emotion will win out every time. But, given time to calm down, think, and apply rationality, they tend to see things more clearly.
What this means is that instead of approaching this issue as a First Amendment Issue, Reid is allow the Tea Baggers and Right Wingers to create the dialogue, and is caving in on it. That is not leadership. That is pure pandering to the television watching fear factory. And what's more, it's making Sharron Angle look stronger, which is the last thing an invertebrate like Reid needs.

When the crazy Israeli serial stabber was nabbed last week trying to flee to his homeland, something happened. Nothing. There were no protests outside Synagogues, there were no people lumping together all people of the Jewish faith/race (I'm not really sure which is correct) as hateful racist murderers. Which is good, because I'm not sure if Elias Abuelazam was a practicing Jew, or just an Israeli national, and anyway, it's totally wrong to condemn an entire group for the wrongdoings of one of it's members, isn't it?
Well, not really, if you're a fear mongering Republican. which is a redundancy, I know, but now the GOP plans to make the plan for a Islamic cultural center at Ground Zero a campaign issue . Those dirty Mooslems along with darker skinned Democratic politicians wish to impose Sharia Law in the US. Unless the Republicans stop them, they'll use their cultural center to impregnate wimmen and force them to squeeze out an army of terror babies! As Republicans and Tea Baggers protest Mosques across the country, it's ironic to note that the group responsible for referring to President Obama as a fascist is adhering pretty closely to many of the 14 characteristics of fascism. So, like the US did to Japanese-Americans during WWII, and like Hitler did to the Jewish people of Europe, the GOP is scapegoating the Muslims of America.
Now, just so you know, I believe all religions are as nutty as the next, from Judaism, to Christianity, to Islam and Scientology. They all wish to impose their will upon us, and the differences between their wills are minuscule at best. By singling out one belief system for persecution, aren't you in fact establishing another as the true faith, which in turn, is unconstitutional? And if you are opposed to the constitution of the United States, don't you stand against this very country itself?
But it's not like they have any real issues to run on. Tax cuts, deregulation and deficit spending on wars helped destroy our economy. They all supported the wars, so they can't run against those. Fear mongering is all the Republicans have, and if they keep the television watchers frightened enough, they'll be too scared to rationalize the truth.And that is the GOP is opposed to America, or at least the part that isn't white Christian conservative and straight.

Are our food companies trying to kill us? It almost seems that way, when you consider that they put high fructose corn syrup in almost everything these days. Already linked to hyper-obesity, HFCS can be found in almost everything out there, from some diet soda drinks and light salad dressings, to even croutons for stuffing chicken. No wonder more than a quarter of Americans are obese.The body processes the fructose in high fructose corn syrup differently than it does old-fashioned cane or beet sugar, which in turn alters the way metabolic-regulating hormones function. It also forces the liver to kick more fat out into the bloodstream. MMMM, more fat in the bloodstream.
Obesity can lead to more health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.
Now HFCS has been found to be the sweet stuff that cancer cells love to eat. In other words, just eating a diet of regularly prepared food increases chances of any cancer cells you may already have to proliferate, especially in your pancreas.
So why is it in everything? Well, one reason is it's cheaper to use than other sugars. Two, the government (those bastards!)policies that aimed to stabilize food prices and support corn production in the 1970s led to a glut of corn and then to high fructose corn syrup. With a cheaper way to sweeten food, producers pumped up the size and amount of sweet snacks and drinks on the market and increased profits. So there you go, making you unhealthy makes some one else richer, and you can probably guess that it's not you. So if you think that the federal government and the FDA are doing their job protecting us safe and coddled in our ~~Nanny~~ Ninny State, guess again. Politics play more of a role than actual food safety. And remember, the FDA are the same people who gave us aspatame!

I know, it sounds like a Creedence Clearwater Revival song, right? But since rain falls everywhere, you would think that no one could claim it as their property.
But, apparently, in some states, it's illegal to collect rainwater, because the water belongs to the state. I'm sure some of you are thinking that is some sort of reconstituted hippie thing, that collecting water affects aquifer and groundwater supplies. Actually, it's completely the opposite.
So any multinational death conglomerate can tap into an underwater spring, purify and put it in plastic bottles, and that's not a problem, but collecting fresh and pure rainwater is illegal? In past times many people had rain barrels in their yard, at what point did someone say "Hey! You can't do that! You need to pay for water from the city!"
A news study says that thanks to ~~global warming~~"climate change", 70% of US counties will face water shortages. So wouldn't it be prudent for people to now begin collecting and savingn water? Wait, conservation is the opposite of the American Way! Use it all up, then bomb some foreign country to take theirs because they're not using it up fast enough. Besides, once the polar ice caps melt, and water levels rise, won't there be more than enough water?

I don't watch sports. I don't care too much for it and can find better things to do with my time than spend it spread out in front of a television set, junk food and beer within reach getting myself worked up over something that has no impact or bearing on my life. Not that I have anything against sports, mind you, and if an opportunity to engage in any physical activity should arise, I would do it as I could really use the exercise.
I really don't care much about college sports, mainly because the art school I attended didn't have a sports team of any sorts, so I don't see how people can get bent out of shape about a college football team from a school they never had any intention of attending.
So I was very dismayed to find out that The NCAA is slavery! The poor put upon college athlete, who is offered a free ride at some of the finest school to get a higher education most people only dream of getting are no better than a slave. After all, they're only there to pass the time until they become eligible for professional sports anyway, why shouldn't they be able to accept gifts from generous donors?
The writer of the piece seems to think it's unfair that Reggie Bush (who, as I found out, is not a member of the Bush family) should have to forfeit his Heisman just because he broke the rules. As everybody knows by now, rules aren't for our professional athletes, especially if they're really good. He also feels that it's not fair that deans, athletic directors and coaches can make big salaries while the poor student has to wait a couple years to make the annual salary of the three aforementioned college professionals combined. He also feels it's not right that the money that colleges make should go to subsidize other "welfare sports", you know, everything that isn't college football or basketball, at the expense of the star player who is only receiving a free education, room and board, books, etc. And heaven for fend that some of that money be put towards academic scholarships for students who have the intellect but not the means nor athletic ability to go on to higher learning with out some help.
Now in Jason Whitlock's defense, I'm sure Reggie Bush wasn't doing anything that any other star athlete does, the problem is, that Bush got caught. But his idea that Bush isn't being compensated because he's too fucking stupid to appreciate a full college ride, well, that's a problem of Bush's lack of a value system, not the NCAA.
Our society puts too much emphasis on sports, winning and money. Sports dominate the world of the television watcher like no other single entity. Winning has become the most important thing, taking a back seat to decency, honesty, and integrity. And money has become everything for so many people in this country that it won't be long before we're all tearing each other apart so we can sell our rendered remains for a fistful of scratch.So I won't weep for the college athlete who should have to follow rules, at least while he's attending college, because he's living a dream. He's just too fucking stupid t5o realize it.

Every country has it's own sacred ground. In Jerusalem, for instance, is the Dome of the Rock, a piece of dirt sacred to both the Jewish people and the Muslims. It's almost as if Hezbollah, the Lebanese political party was planning on building a 'terrorist' theme park there. And almost on cue, professional Islamophobe Sarah Palin, who refudiated charges the Tea Party is racist, joined forces with Tea Party racist Mark Williams to fight the Monkey God's Middle Finger to Manhattan.
It's the Right Wing Fear Factory in full effect. This being an election year, they need something, anything to scare the good little Christ-Stains into suporting their party (the whole abortion thing, being played out, as it wouldn't take very long for someone on the left to point out that with a Republican Congress and administration they did nothing to stop that wedge issue)by stoking up the fears that yes indeedy-those Mooslems, they taking over, and soon will be forcing us to bow to Allah and Mecca everyday.

There is a small problem with these billions of dollars going to Israel. A little thing called the Symington Amendment which bans US economic and military assistance to countries which acquire nuclear enrichment technology when they do not comply with IAEA regulations and inspections. That would make this whole package, well, illegal. Not to worry, though Mr. President, US law, like the Congress that enacts them, is a thing that is easily moved.

And if an intelligence failure is played out the world stage? Don't blame it on your agency. Fuck no. Blame it on the victim! Because if you can believe that the intelligence agency with the largest budget in the world was outsmarted, then you probably would believe that a slim majority of Americans support a military strike against Iran, if you were the type to believe that polls are nothing more than manipulated information used to create opinion and not reflect it. But hey, in their world we're more than halfway there! Never mind that in the rest of the world, the attempted bribe story is already out there, the rest of the world knew that reasons given for our invasion of Iraq were lies (France, anyone?), it just never made it past the gatekeepers of anonymous sources.
So while the egg on our collective face is discretely wiped off by the corporate media, and the blame is placed not on the criminals, but on their victim, maybe we should consider that another intelligence failure ( you know, like 9/11, Iraq's WMD, etc,) is to blame, we still keep relying on the intelligence gleaned from people who don't appear to be very smart.

Not to be outdone in the crazy department, Sue Myrick, a Republican from Nutty Cuckoosays Iranians are teaming up with Venezuela to infiltrate our borders. Spending six months in Caraccas to learn Spanish, then it's across the border to "do us harm".
Well, that should could and would be the end of it, but no. Now there's talk of the Taliban training jihadist monkeys! That's right! Cute little macacas given an AK-47 and trained how to discern and shoot only American soldiers (because, you know, monkeys are just that smart). We all see monkeys on television. And except for that episode of Gilligan's Island where one got hold of some abandoned Japanese armaments and started attacking the castaways, they are all pretty cute. Not really, but from a distance.

A Tale Of Two Defectors

Defector 1: Reza Kahlili, a Iranian revolutionary Guard defector who went to work for the CIA following the revolution of 1979 says that Tehran will attack Israel. Speaking at a conference at The Washington Institute For Near East Policy, Mr Khalili (not his real name) has stated that Iran will unleash the largest suicide bombing mission ever! Of course, since Israel has nuclear weapons while Tehran doesn't, it will most certainly be a suicide mission, conveniently timed for the propaganda run up for the US/Israel attack against Iran, later this year.
Defector 2:Shahram Amiri is a top Iranian nuclear scientist. He went missing a year ago on a pilgrimage to Medina, a city in Saudi Arabia. The Iranian government claims he was kidnapped, the US denied that claim.
Well, fast forward a year later, and Mr. Amiri (his real name) has turned up in the Iranian interest section of the Pakistani embassy in Washington DC. Mr. Amiri has claimed he was kidnapped and held against his will where he was "under enormous psychological pressure and supervision of armed agents in the past 14 months".
Hmmm. Mr. Amiri then goes on to state that "I was not prepared to betray my country under any kind of threats or bribery by the US government."
So, in other words, the US government, desperate to start a war against a country that is not a threat to anyone (unlike, say, the US), kidnaps a top Iranian nuclear scientist, using various means of coercion tries to get him to betray his country (possibly by stating lies about Iran's nuclear power program). Then the man escapes, posts an interview on YouTube stating he is a prisoner, which is then countered by another YouTube video of someone resembling Amiri saying he is fine and every body should just go back to buying things and disregard the previous video. Now it turns out the first video is right, and all Mr. Amiri wishes is that he just be allowed to return back to his country.
So there you have it. A defector who (most likely) was coerced (or bribed) into telling the chickenhawk war mongers what they needed to hear, and a kidnapping victim that was tried to be passed off as a defector in order to lie to sell ANOTHER war to the American television watcher.

First off, Sam, who hasn't done a lot of plumbing since being turned into an icon for the McCain Campaign of 2008, has backed two candidates in the same race. It must be hard to go back to plunging people's toilets when you've been on SNL.
Also, Mr. Wurzelbacher has joined the "Take Our Country Back Tour" joining other fellow 'Americans' such as Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Karl Rove and Sarah Palin. (Although, to be honest, "Joe" doesn't even rate a mention on their home page). The goal of said tour is to encourage Americans to vote for candidates who believe "in the right of the American people—and only the American people—to determine the course and destiny of the United States of America." No more of those Kenyan Muslim Fascists deciding our policies for us. (But it is perfectly okay for our foreign policy to be decided by Israel). The Real America, according to Sammy, lives out here, the people who do the jobs that Mr. Plumber would do, if he didn't have a celebrity status to exploit. Sam and Co. don't ask you to vote for Republicans or Democrats, you see, but 'Americans', which has become another one of those right wing code words like 'family values' that mean exclusively white people, or people of color who know their place, like Michael Steele or Piyush "Bobby" Jindal.

General Casey Wants To Give Afghanistan What We Don't Have In America, And He Wants Us To Waste Another Decade Giving It To Them

Speaking at the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival Friday, Army Chief Of Staff Gen. George Casey says we may be fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq another ten years. Whose idea is that? Certainly not mine, but I'm not invested in the military-industrial complex, so I won't be making a dime by bleeding the country dry.
But what's more upsetting are the objectives of the military in the region.
1.)You are only going to succeed when the people perceive there is a government represented by their interests-So why should the people of Afghanistan have what we don't? My interests don't include making the rich people richer, mine include something like providing decent health care for every American,or that those struggling through tough economic times not of their creation can keep their homes and feed their families. These were both wars of choice, only I didn't choose them.
2.)when there is an economy that can give them a job to support their families-Wait a minute-we had that here! I remember it well. Then our corporate idiocracy said, you know what, if we outsource your jobs to another country that doesn't have organized labor, we'll make out-we mean, you'll be able to buy more consumer goods because they won't cost as much. And the television watchers all said "Yup, yup, yup, more stuff for me! I like the sound of that~!"
3.)when there are educational systems that can educate their family-Do you mean like we used to have? Nowadays, many right wing candidates are calling for the abolition of the department of education. Why? Because the Official Party of 'NO!' said that education is bad because they won't let your myths be taught to other people's children, science is bad because it disproves their faith, and the only thing children should be reading is our big book of approved fables.
4.)States, non-states and individual actors who are increasingly willing to use violence-You mean, like flying unmanned drones into civilian areas, casually referring to civilian deaths as collateral damage, and bombing areas where we think there may be people we want to kill? Doesn't anybody in charge have at least one iota of common sense to realize that maybe the reason that they are shooting at us is because we started shooting at them first?
Of course, the general, who is set to retire in nine months , was followed by a Pentagon spin doctor, who stated:"General Casey was speaking of the types of conflict we will be fighting for a decade or so. He did not, nor did he intend to, imply that we would be fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan for 10 more years."
What he really meant to say was "We'll be fighting in Iran as well. That could take some time."

It's about time we faced up to the fact that the United States is a corporate idiocracy. I mean, they can't all come from the Tea party, as they only comprise 18% of the population, but it is nearly as many Americans who think that Sarah Palin resigned as governor because it was the right thing to do for Alaska (which in a way, it was).
To some, the dumbing down of the United States isn't happening quick enough. There's only so many episodes of Jersey Shore that you can get people to watch. So to help ease this country into a more acceptable moronic state, Glenn Beck has plans for an university ('magic underpants' not included). Praying To Your Red, White And Blue Security Blanket

Fox News, which we all have known for years, is neither fair balanced. Or truthful either. Basically it exists to reinforce right wing talking points while stirring up the base about non-existent issues.
Recently, the network, in it's effort to rile up the corporate idiocracy, incorrectly claimed a school refused to let students say the pledge of allegiance. Without going into much detail about how the pledge was written by a Christian Socialist, the recitation of the pledge is one of the forms of brainwashing foisted upon children at the earliest age . Essentially a prayer to a piece of cloth, it is however considered important to the weak and feeble minded people who think it actually means something.
Following the erroneous report by Fox News, the school began receiving offensive hateful and potentially criminal messages from Fox News viewers. Because nothing makes one more patriotic than threatening a school board.
The whole controversy began when an initiative from the leader of the Republican Youth called for the pledge to be recited at every school. Because nothing says freedom more than being forced to mouth empty words to a piece of cloth. The student, Sean Harrington, gave an impassioned speech to the board spewing right wing cliches and talking points such as 'freedom isn't free' and other such drivel. All was in vain, though, as board members deadlocked on whether or not to pass the proposal. The school principal offered a compromise, wherein all who wished could join the principal in the school lobby before the start of each day and recite the pledge, which Harrington rejected.

"I was really heartbroken," Harrington said of the deadlocked vote. "It's hard to think that something so traditional in American society was turned down. ... It tells me that we've basically cast aside what our country is founded on."

Um, I think Mr. Harrington needs to retake American History 101, because the pledge wasn't even written until 1892. Our country was founded on the Constitution, which prohibits the establishment of a religion, which is what the idolatry based Americanism he wants to force upon all his fellow students sounds like to me. And as far as being 'something so traditional in American society', one must remember that it wasn't even until the forties that it became compulsory for students to recite it. So it's not that much of a long standing tradition.
So basically, what we have, is a school board being terrorized by right wing fanatics because some arrested developmental Republican still needs his red, white, and blue security blanket. Boy, is he in for a shock when he walks out into the real world.

The upcoming weekend is a big holiday weekend, and, as usual, the big oil companies will exploit it by raising gas prices to pocket big profits. And motorists will gripe and grumble, and still pay it, because Americans are still too stupid to invest in any sensible alternative energy, a reliable mass transit service, or anything else that would ease our country's dependence on fossil fuels.
But if you think you're going to see high fuel prices now, just wait until the US and Israel strike Tehran. OPEC has warned war with Iran would mean an unlimited price hike, which means, bend over and grab your ankles, America. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mullen also thinks a military strike on Iran would be destabilizing.
And yet, there we are, surrounding Iran on all sides, prepared to do our worse, all based on lies. Which proves how stupefied the American people have become by the corporate media. They have forgotten that the reason were in Iraq is a bunch of lies. Weapons of Mass Destruction? Now they've conveniently moved to Iran
I could once again debunk every argument you may hear about why we need to go to war with Iran. But I'm as tired of typing them as you are of reading them. But still the lies continue. Because we need them, our corporate media isn't interested in the truth, and are too far embedded in the Washington DC Cocktail Party Set to be honest.

The Old Two War Party Bait And Switch

Our political system would work a whole lot better if our two "opposing" parties were on the same page at the same time. For instance, Republicans opposed the filibuster when they had the White House, and now, with a Democratic president, it's considered an essential tool of government. (I know, I know, the GOP are "tools" of government)
As another example, in 2006 and 2008, the Democratic Party rode into power on a wave of anti-war sentiment. But now, with antiwar sentiment momentarily distracted by the continuing ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the Democratically controlled House has voted for more funding for the Afghanistan quagmire, President Obama has formally disavowed the July 2011 draw down date. Meanwhile, the Democratically controlled US Congress and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton welcomed new US sanctions against Iran, a prelude to war with that country.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, most Republicans now think the Iraq War was a mistake. Some have even gone as far as to call it "Illegal and immoral". I wonder, though, is this true regret, or is this an excuse, in that great game of Risk that has become US foreign policy in the Middle East, an excuse to move our troops in Iraq to it's immediate neighbor to the east. Or, maybe the change of heart within his own party and the fact that as an architect of a policy they are calling illegal he could now be prosecuted for war crimes has led Dick Cheney to the hospital. Don't worry, Dick. All this posturing is, I'm sure, just that, as Americans look closely at what we haven't accomplished after many years, many lives, and many, many more dollars wasted in a region of the world far removed from our back yards.
The problem is the learned helplessness of the two party system. Unable to think outside of the box, they are trapped in the Republican/Democrat box. Both parties have been in power on and off, for at least the last century, both parties have brought the country to the state it's in, and yet, people keep hoping that maybe this election cycle, or the next will bring real change if their party gets the control it needs.

US House Accuses Iran Of Being Just Like The US

When I was in high school, the US and the USSR were engaged in the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, or SALT II talks, which was about limiting the number of times each nation could kill the other one. I think they finally settled on 150. My father, an ultraconservative, one might even say reactionary, was opposed to such a treaty with the Russians, because, as he told me, "You can't trust those commies. They never keep their word and have broken every treaty they ever signed."
Fast forward a few decades, and here is the United States, breaking another treaty it signed, namely the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or the NNPT. Under the NNPT, the US recognizes the right of other nations to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes, such as electrical power, or medical research, and as such, would not hinder any signatory nation from doing so, and even offering to assist said nation in their quest to using the atom for peace. Except now, the US is doing everything in it's power to stop Iran from doing what it is guaranteed as a signatory to the NNPT. In other words, just like the commies of long ago, they are not keeping their word and essentially breaking the treaty which they have signed.
And now, the US House is send H.R. 1457 to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in the latest round in the lead up to the invasion of Iran, using entirely fraudulent claims.
1. President Ahmadinejad fraudulently won the last election
Remember in 2000, the hotly contested presidential election in the US? The one where the State of Florida had to pay roughly $5000 each to black voters disenfranchised by the Republican Party? Remember when it finally came out that Al Gore did in fact win Florida in 2000, we were told to "get over it"?
However, while there was no evidence of voter fraud in the 2009 Iranian elections, there is evidence that the US corporate media tried to paint it as such. So you see, vote fraud in another country is bad, very bad, but election fraud in the US is no big deal.
2. Iran has plenty of oil, why do they need to develop nuclear power?
A lot of neocons are suspicious of Iran developing nuclear power, because, they say, why do that, when they have all that oil? Well, in addition to having vast quantities of oil, Iran also has 1400 uranium mines. As the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran deputy head Fuel Hossein Faqihian pointed out, nuclear energy is a good alternative to energy derived from non-renewable fossil fuels as they are cleaner and cause less environmental damage.
Iran has even agreed to an arrangement with Turkey in Brazil in which raw uranium in Iran is exchanged for enriched uranium, thereby ensuring that Iran cannot enrich uranium to a high enough yield to use in nuclear weapons.
3. Iran supports terrorism
This claim is made because Iran funds Hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist organization by the US, Canada and Israel, but not the rest of the world which recognizes the differences between the security and political wings of the organization. Meanwhile the US, which created Al qaeda, is spending $400 billion annually to fund the MEK, a terrorist organization to destabilize the Tehran regime.
4. Iran continues to deny human rights and democracy to the people of Iran Right now, the whole of the Palestinian population in the Gaza strip is suffering under the collective punishment of the Israel led blockade against them. This blockade was put in place when the people, believing in "democracy" voted for the Hamas party to rule the Palestinian Authority over the US/Israel backed Fatah party. The blockade violates the human rights of about a million and a half people, many women and children. Meanwhile, right wing politicians in the US want us to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Commission because it wants to investigate the excessive use of force in the Mavi Marmara flotilla raid.
5. Iran has a secret nuclear weapons program Nope.No evidence of that. Meanwhile, Israel which has nuclear weapons (and tried to sell some to South Africa), refuses to sign the NNPT or open up it's sites for inspection.
6. President Ahmadinejad has vowed to wipe Israel off the map
Here we go again. His statement was a gross mistranslation, taken out of context.
However, Israel has vowed to drop nuclear weapons on Iran again, and again,and again.

Right now, in the Red Sea , there are eleven US warships and three German built Israeli subs armed with nuclear cruise missiles . While there is a problem with Iran "wiping Israel off the map", there doesn't seem to be a problem with the US wiping Iran off the map. With the US now mired in two wars in the Gulf region, can it really afford to get tangled up in another? Does it really matter? We the people no longer decide what's right for this country. Although the many television-watchers may be cowed by corporate media propaganda about Big bad Iran, the truth is, while Iran isn't the greatest country in the world, neither is the US any more, mainly because we have become the aggressor that behaves in a fashion to it's once feared enemies. Economically, we can no longer afford to repair all the damaged nations of the world, because we have become as damaged.

You Can't Judge A Book B y It's Cover, But You Can Judge A Judge By The Way He Covers His Books

Given the unmitigated disaster that the the leak at BP's Deepwater Horizon has become, one would think that a temporary ban on drilling might not be a bad idea. The Obama administration had hoped the ban would allow time to ensure that other wells are operating safely. That ban has blocked by a federal judge, ruling in favor of drilling companies.
Well, guess what? That's right, the judge who ruled in favor of the drilling companies, US District Judge Martin "Marty" Feldman, owns $15,000 worth of stock in offshore drilling companies. Can you say conflict of interest?
It's a good thing that Americans have guardians of justice such as Judge Feldman, who will put public and environmental safety over their own personal gain. Judges who would recuse themselves from cases where a conflict of interest may appear, just to insure there is no appearance of impropriety.
The truth is, our justice system, much the same as our legislature, is bought and paid for, and unless you happen to have enough money to buy into it, you are seriously fucked.

China has the power to shut down its Internet, so why can't we?
Well, for starters, China is a communist country, while the US poses as some sort of a democracy. In the US, the open and free exchange of ideas is one of the many freedoms we have that make us better than say, China, where people have the freedom to work ten hour days seven days a week or be crushed by tanks!
Of course, Sen. Lieberman defends this act as a matter of national security, just like he defended the murder of an unarmed American citizen by the IDF as a security issue. So are we trust him on this? Remember what Ben Franklin said about liberty and security.
In the days before 9/11, the FBI shut down many Arab and Muslim websites. Some up to five days prior to that event. So the government already has shown it can shut down websites, even with out a just cause.
The internet is a dangerous place to those in charge these days. Just as quick as they can put out their disinformation someone else can discredit it as the fake it is. And with the US in preparation for yet another war by sending 11 ships to off the coast of Iran, they need to keep a lid on what's really going on before this administration's lies, much like the lies of the previous administration, are exposed for the falsehoods they really are.

Eric Cantor Hates America

Just who does Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Tel Aviv) represent? When the Netanyahu government announced they were building more settlements during a visit by VP Joe Biden, Cantor blasted the Obama administration as 'irresponsible' on Israel. Cantor, who receives a career total of $200,730 from Pro-Israel PACs, also told President Obama to veto any UN resolution condemning Israel for it's assault on an unarmed flotilla where one American citizen was shot in the head four times.
Well, one would hope that given how much support Cantor has given Israel when it's been in the wrong, that at least he would demonstrate the same compassion for the American citizens whom he allegedly represents. Right?
Wrong.
In fact, Cantor, who opposed President Obama's economic stimulus package, has actually been betting against US Treasury Bonds.
Now I'm not a believer in Karma or anything, but it is good to know that while Cantor has been betting against his country and the people who allegedly represents, his bet is down 31%. Still, I think that it would be beneficial to our country to have it's leaders working to improve things, not hoping to get rich from the suffering of it's people. Maybe the people of Virginia will wake up and vote out a representative who doesn't want to make America a better country for all it's citizens, but I'm not going to bet on it.

Not Rex Duncan. Rex Duncan is smarter than your average Islamofascist. He knows that Islam and liberals are conspiring together to erase all traces of our Judeo-Christian values from the country. So Rex Duncan, state senator from Oklahoma (naturally), has decided to introduce legislation that makes it illegal for liberal judges to impose sharia law in Oklahoma. Sen. Duncan would require using only state and federal law when ruling on a decision.
Good.
Because, as this Biblically deranged person has just done is to prevent any law being passed on anything based on the bible as well. You see, the US Constitution specifically prevents wingnuts like Duncan from establishing the Christian Theocracy their Taliban is intent on turning the US into. Although he doesn't state it, I'm sure this legislation would require that conservative judges be banned from imposing Christian law as well, lest this bill be challenged and ruled as unconstitutional by the....wait, I forgot that the Supreme Court is insane as well.
Somewhere someone put the fear of Islam into Sen.Duncan, and in another time or place, it may have been replaced with a fear of Judaism, Buddhism, or any other group that doesn't fit in with their agenda. These types need an evil enemy to rise up so they can protect their constituents from them in order to gain their votes. And, if one is not readily available, they'll find one and make up stuff about them. Sort of like how the our politicians are making up all kinds of crazy things up about Iran right now. But in his impetus to limit something that no one was intending on doing anytime in the foreseeable future, he has impeded the plans of tjhose in the US who were planning on using their superstitions to impose thier belief system on everybody else. Good work, Sen. Duncan. You may not realize it now, but you done good.

No, according to Chick Schumer, senator from New York, democracy is about voting the way other people want you to vote, even if you have to strangle them economically. You know, like the Gaza blockade.
No longer are people allowed to base their voting habits on the truth as they perceive it, they are being manipulated into voting in someone else's interest. This works well on Republicans, who have Fox News/Rush Limbaugh/the NRA/the AFA to scare people into believing those opposed to their agenda are terrorists.
But Schumer is worse than that. He believes that Palestinians deserve it because "they don't believe in the Torah". Hey, I don't believe in the Torah, does that make it okay for someone to economically strangle me until I do? All this proves is that Israel is not a democracy, but an apartheid theocracy, albeit a racist one, where those people not of the state religion are not entitled to the same rights as those of the correct religion.
So if Chuck Schumer believes in manipulating democracy, maybe he doesn't belong in our congress. Using fear to get people to vote against their own interest doesn't make for a better democracy. It makes for a frightened paranoid populace, armed with guns and just enough misinformation to make them dangerous.

So Al Gore thinks that ~~global warming~~ climate change is a moral issue. That's all I need, a morality lesson on a man who circumnavigates the globe in a private jet. Sure, I know, he uses carbon offsets, but do carbon offsets make his pollution less polluting because he isn't polluting somewhere else?
It's like the Carbon exchange that will make Gore a rich man, it doesn't really stop pollution if someone is still spewing carbon into the air? And what's so moral about a carbon tax? Robbing the poor and working people so that our government can take more of their money so they can give it to Israel to buy more bullets to kill more Americans? Where's the morality in that?
the problem is that this country has lost it's moral compass. We don't seem to have a problem with starving people and denying them medical treatment when Israel does it, but somewhere else? Then all of America suddenly grows a conscience.
So save your talk of 'morality' for some sucker who has no problem giving you their hard earned money so you can travel in comfort on a private jet. John Boehner: Man Of Grace, Respect And Class

Before there was a Monty Python, there was the Beatles, four lads from Liverpool whom, besides being great musicians and songwriters, had a flash of wit about them. Long before John Lennon dressed down an upper class twit in A Hard Day's Night, he stood before the Queen at the Royal Variety show and asked the people in the cheaper seats to clap their hands, and the rest of the audience to "rattle their jewelry". Irreverent and cheeky, there wasn't anybody whom they wouldn't take down a peg.
So it was of little surprise when Sir Paul McCartney, a Member of the British Empire, and a knight as well, made a comment to President Obama when he received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song about how nice that America again has a president "who knows what a library is". ( I think it's nice we have a president who's not as likely to call it a 'liberry')
Just a joke, right? Well, not to House Minority Leader John Boehner. Boehner is demanding Sir Paul apologize for taking a jab at George W Bush.

"Like millions of other Americans, I have always had a good impression of Paul McCartney and thought of him as a classy guy, but I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of grace and respect he displayed at the White House," Boehner said in a statement. "I hope he'll apologize to the American people for his conduct which demeaned him, the White House and President Obama."

Hmmm. Lack of grace and respect? Let's look in the vault, and see how much class, grace and respect Rep. Boehner has had for President Obama, shall we?
John Boehner: President Obama has a 'pre-9/11 mentality'. That's not so bad. How about Boehner says Obama's bills make him 'want to throw up'. Vomiting, always a sign of class and grace, as exhibited by George Bush the first at a Japanese state dinner during his term. Then there was the claim that Obama is driving the US towards socialism, that's certainly respectful, and classy. Remember that li'l piece o'wisdom from George W? The "terrorists" hate us because they are not free. And, given what Israel is doing in Gaza, he's right, the Palestinians are not free. What's more, they have no recourse. The UN has sixty-five resolutions against Israel, many of them regarding it's treatment of Palestinians. That doesn't include the numerous ones against Israel vetoed by the US in the UNSC. So, if you are a Palestinian, your land is being stolen, your livelihood, your olive groves being destroyed and you can do nothing about it, or your family and friends are suffering, and you can do nothing about, what recourse do you have?
As Americans, we are taught, as Christians, as progressives, as citizens of the Earth to try and help those people who are suffering. Many people who have not sold their soul to a belief system or have been brainwashed by a media more intent on drumming up support for a rating feeding war than offering an objective view, see the people of Gaza suffering, and wish to help those people. Guess what? You are not free to do that either. And, if as an American, you are shot four times in the head trying to bring some good old fashioned justice to an unjust situation, it's your fault if our "greatest ally" murders you in cold blood. You wouldn't say that it's a soldiers fault, when, in the service of the corpocracy, he is killed by the enemy. Many people now serving in overseas wars are mistakenly believing that the people they are fighting in Iraq, or Afghanistan are the ones responsible for the attacks of 9/11. And if Harry Reid told voters that it's a soldier's fault he died because he joined the Army, the corporate media and right wing would be all over him like the IDF on an unarmed relief flotilla.
And why are the people of Gaza suffering? Because in the 2006 Palestinian parliament elections, Hamas won a majority of seats. Democracy in action, right? Well, it seems the US and Israel backed Fatah (which is probably why Fatah lost; US citizens are the only ones who don't mind their politicians being owned by foreign governments), so in retaliation for the Palestinians exercising the "freedom" to vote as they saw fit, the Gaza Blockade began.
Many people have made comparisons to the Gaza population and the treatment of the Jewish people under the Nazi regime. There is a slight difference. What happened in the ghettos of Warsaw and other European countries under the Hitler regime was not funded by the US government. It was not condoned by our politicians.
In the end, when you treat fellow human beings as animals, with less rights than you have, you cannot expect them to respond in a civilized fashion. And as long as the US sends unmanned drones into Pakistan, or uses white phosphorus on the citizens of Fallujah, or spends nine years dropping bombs on the civilians in Afghanistan, "they" will always "hate" us. As long as we prevent the UN from issuing any punitive measures against Israel while simultaneously pushing for more punitive sanctions against countries like Iran, which hasn't been proven to be doing anything against it's obligations under the NPT, all at the insistence of Israel, "they" will always "hate" us. Eliminating American and Israeli exceptionalism may not end all terrorism, but it is a step in the right direction.

A gaggle of television watching diplomats? That's what the US is hoping for as it pushes back it's sanctions against Iran due to the fallout from the flotilla massacre. You know, the recent murder of activists bringing aid to the suffering Palestinians of Gaza by the Israeli Navy. Meanwhile, the US is quick to claim that blame Israel for the crimes it has committed when in fact, it's the activists fault for getting in the way of the bullets the Israelis fired. Even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has asked asked world leaders to dial down their criticism of Israel.
In fact, some US congresspersons defended the excessive use of force by the Israelis, but then why shouldn't they since they all receive contributions from Pro-Israel PACs.
So remember, the Israelis can murder civilians with impunity, because they have bought our politicians. But Iran, which is living up to it's obligations under the NPT must suffer sanctions, because it's what Israel wants. So now they have to wait until the international outrage has died down before they can ask the UN to punish Iran, while hoping that no sanctions are levied against them.

With Friends Like Israel, It's No Surprise We Have So Many Enemies

I was watching The Road yesterday, a movie based on The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and realized that it was a parable for the US. A man and his son travel south on a road in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, searching for food and avoiding the dangers of thieves and cannibals, all the while "carrying the fire" of goodness within themselves. Along the way, circumstances arise which force the father to behave in ways that are not good, with his son asking whether or not they were still the good guys.
And in the post-9/11 world, that is what has happened to the US. Where we used to oppose torture, it has now become official government policy, under both the the Bush and Obama administrations. We are increasingly being taxed while receiving less representation in our "democracy". But moreover, we are aligning ourselves with countries that do not hold the same values.
One such state is the criminal state of Israel. We are told that it's "the only democracy in the Middle east", yet when the people of Palestine voted for Hamas to represent them in the PA, the US and Israel instead installed their puppet regime. So much for democracy. Since then, the people of Gaza have been suffering while vital humanitarian items are denied, a form of collective punishment which is a violation of human rights, as well as illegal under international law. During Operation Cast lead, Israel committed war crimes, along with Hamas.
Now once again, Israel has shown contempt for humanity and basic human rights, as well as international law, by attacking the Freedom Flotilla in international waters. Nineteen people were killed and dozens more were injured when the Israelis boarded and attacked a convoy of ships delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. The UN has called for an investigation, but the reality is that the international body is powerless to do anything because of the US backing in the Security Council.
So, you see, along the road, the US has become the bad guys. We threaten Iran with sanctions for it's peaceful nuclear power program, yet we illegally under our own laws give $3 billion in aid to Israel, which has nuclear weapons, yet refuses to sign the NPT. And sure, you could write your congressperson to complain, but since the majority of them receive contributions from Aipac, it's a moot point, since they have proven time and again they're not listening to the American people.
This Memorial Day, the time has come to ask ourselves, "What have all our fallen soldiers died for?" Democracy? No. Freedom? No. Liberty? A sense of righteousness? An end to cruel and unusual punishment?No. No. And no. Everything they allegedly died for has been made a mockery by a political situation where money and re-election have become more important than holding up the ideals that our soldiers are still being asked to kill and die for. Remember that today, or better yet, this election year.
UPDATE: Since an attack on a ship flying the flag of a NATO country is considered an attack on NATO itself, will NATO, under the obligations of Article 5 now form a coalition to invade Israel? Of course not! Don't be silly. Israel is exempt from all rule of law. HOLOCAUST!!! HOLOCAUST!!!
UPDATE 2: Israel now claims Al Qeada had ties to boat. Sure, it was Al Qaeda. I guess that makes the murder of nineteen people okay!

A Monument To Religious Intolerance.

The world is full of sacred ground, places like the Dome of the Rock, which are venerated by people of faith as holy ground. In the US, it's Ground Zero, a site where many capitalists were lifted up to that big trading floor in the sky by a conspiracy of Islamic magicians who were, although they were unable to fly a plane, somehow managed to guide two jumbo jets into the towers of the World Trade Center.
Why did they do this? Because in their quest for world dominance, the people of Islam decided they wanted to build a mosque at Ground Zero. Well, not actually on Ground Zero, but two blocks away. Naturally, right thinking people are opposed to this, because they believe in the myth that nineteen poorly trained men were able to pierce the most secured airspace in the world.
I propose instead that this most hallowed and venerated piece of real estate be turned into a museum of religious intolerance, a monument to the hatred and animosity created in the name of a loving god. The victims of Auschwitz could be remembered next to the victims of Gaza. A memorial to the victims of the Salem Witch Trials could be placed next to one for the victims of the Spanish Inquisition. Let the world know and see that the most violent and hate filled people are those who are people of god.

There are some people who think it's pointless to vote, that our system is rigged against us anyways. Or only vote in "important" elections, because it really matters which corpocratic party is in charge of the White House. The truth is that the oil spill in the Gulf would have happened under either party's watch, because they all receive corporate contributions to look the other way while rich people get richer, usually at the expense of those less fortunate, the middle class.
The reality is, the only real important elections are at the state and local level. Real change can be effected when you're imposing an idea on a smaller group of people. No better example of this can be found than in Texas, where the newly elected state board of education has issued a curriculum based on Christian "values". Because, in their minds, the US is a Christian nation, and in their feeble minds the words separation of church and state never appear in the Constitution.
This is the beginning of America's decline into a full-fledged Idiocracy. What these mouth breathing television watchers don't understand is the same principle that allows them the freedom to practice their belief system also allows me the freedom from having their belief system imposed on me. A belief system so narrow that it's knowledge filters require that Thomas Jefferson's importance in the establishment of this country be denied, while championing the somewhat dubious achievements of criminals such as serial adulterer Newt Gingrich and chronic napper Ronald Reagan. That's why I was happy to hear that this year's winner, Rima Faikh has got those durned Islamophobes up in arms. Being that Miss Faikh is a Muslim, Debbie Schlussel, a butter faced, bleached blond Conservative, has imagined all kinds of links between Ms. Faikh and Hezbollah and even called her a sleazebag. Another site says this is the next step in Islamization of America, and only those who believe in Israel should win. Thankfully, people's prejudices can now extend to such trivial things as beauty pageants. Way to go, you've politicized somehting else completely pointless!
Miss Faikh, who is a naturalized American citizen of Lebanese descent, has the same family name as some members of Hezbollah, therefore she should not win the contest, even though she is unbelievably hot. She should be disqualified because she makes some racist right wingers uncomfortable with the whole idea of America as a melting pot. You know, the same wipes who think that President Obama is a Kenyan-born secret fascist Muslim. I say good for the judges of this pageant for looking beyond the same bland blond bitches we've been seeing for years.

As an excellent example of the screwed-up priorities of the Taxed-Enough-Already crowd, they protest when President Obama bails out GM, they protest when President Obama tries to provide health care to millions of fellow American citizens with out any, but when the Senate approves billions more in funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not a peep. Even while the Pentagon cut pay for soldiers in Iraq, making this nothing more than a bailout for the Military-Industrial Complex, nothing from the television watching soldier sniffers.
This is also a prime example of the lack of difference between the Republican and Democratic Parties. The Democrats, who gained a majority by exploiting the antiwar sentiment in 2006, and again in 2008, voted for funding a war that Gen. McChrystal has termed a draw. So dumping more money into this sinkhole would be a waste of tax-payer money, right?
Yes, but, being an election year, rather than stand on principal, the Democrats instead choose to let their decisions be guided by their desire to hold onto their cushy jobs where they can bet against the stock market as they pass legislation to deregulate it and probably invest heavily into defense contractors, all with the salary they made from, us, the tax payer.

Here's Five Years I'll Never Get Back

Today marks the fifth anniversary of this blog. Normally, I don't go in for this sort of crap, but I figured five years is a milestone (or is that millstone?), what the hey?
Back when I started blogging, Fox News actually claimed to be fair and balanced. Most Americans still trusted the president and supported the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This blog was started in opposition to the many wars the Bush administration had begun, and to the ones that loomed in the distance. The first post pondered the lies that administration might possibly use to get the American people to back another unilateral war of conquest, this time in Iran. Although we may have switched presidential administrations, lies are still being used to brainwash the people into supporting another war it cannot afford. And, of course, the compliant corporate media is investigating none of these claims, just like they never followed through too much on Plamegate, or the Downing Street Memos, two hard pieces of evidence of a conspiracy within the Bush administration to break the law in order to start an illegal invasion of a country, like Iran, that is not a national security threat.
Back then, there was a sense of camaraderie and community; we were all traitors together. Trolls would stop by more frequently and accuse us of being terrorist sympathizers, make vague threats against us, and vainly try to defend the actions of their revered president. Most of them such as Lily, my blog partner at Lose the Noose (though we do still keep in touch), my partner at American Insurgency Ron Nasty, who may or may not be lost in the woods, or having another extended stay in rehab, Neil Shakespeare, one of the best, along with Rex Kramer at Spurious George and Peacechick Mary at Knock Knock have moved on. Others too, have neglected their blogs, or simply gone away as well, just like the Bush administration.
Back when I started, protest rallies were roundly ignored by the news media, and war protesters were relegated to free speech zones. Now, even smaller gatherings of Tea Party protesters capture the media's attention, and in some cases are even stage managed by news producers. Bush derangement syndrome has been replaced by Birthers, Condi Rice has been replaced by Hillary Clinton and Afghanistan is being replaced by Pakistan Through it all, I have had three system crashes and replaced one mother board. And while I may not get around as much as I used to, as it takes a while to recover all the links I previously have had bookmarked, I do occasionally make it around, to those of you who still are out there. And I'll still be here, sporadically as usual, always surfing the 'Net for something to piss me off enough to write a rant, and actually finish it.

Wait A Minute......We're At War?

If we are at war, wouldn't that make Liz Cheney a traitor for criticizing the president during a war? That's what we were told when we dared to criticize President Bush, by the very likes of Liz Cheney.
And what does Liz Cheney know about winning war? About as much as her daddy, Draft Deferment Dick, that's for sure. All Liz Cheney is, is another generation of entitled spawn of a criminal class more intent on ripping people off than actually making us safer. The main problem with this country is that we have a new class of conservative royalty who spew rhetoric with out actually knowing anything.
First of, the Times Square "bomber" is a naturalized citizen of the United States. that makes him entitled to the same rights as you and I. Including his Miranda rights. And if this new class wants to take those rights from him because they have labeled him a "terrorist", then that's all they have to do to you.
Secondly, General Petraeus has stated the bomber was acting alone. Who are you going to trust? Some loud mouth brat mouthing off about things she doesn't know about all in the name of protecting her deadly father's legacy? Or a general who's in the thick of the fight? Given the fact that Liz Cheney is on Fox News, an altered reality of Republican candidates and talking points, I'm gonna go with the General on this one.
Thirdly, we have been fighting this war against "terrorism" for some time now, and it has yet to be successful. Instead of dropping bombs and unmanned drones on innocent civilians, maybe we ought to examine our foreign policy. Treating people like their lives aren't worth a shit leaves them feeling like all they can do is blow shit up. Of course, this foreign policy was initiated by Liz's dad, you can't tell her this doesn't work, because most entitled people such as her have never been known to admit their mistakes.
So if Liz Cheney's main complaint is that President Obama's first instinct is to obey the Constitution, well them I guess we know here that puts the party of 'NO'. No rights, no change, and no hope. How's that workin' out for ya?

I'm sorry senator, but Iran poses no threat to our security. It has not been found to diverting any of it's enriched uranium away from it's nuclear power program. Moreover, we have nuclear weapons, thousands of them, which we keep as a deterrent against attack by any unfriendly nation with the knowledge that if they were to attack us first, we could completely wipe them out within a matter of minutes. We have, over the years, spent billions of dollars on this. We can hit any country on the planet. Iran cannot hit any country on the planet, because they do not possess, nor have they been found to be seeking, nuclear weapons.

The demonization of President Ahmadinejad is the first step in the propaganda run up to a military strike against Iran. Both the IAEA and the NIE agree that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons within it's nuclear energy program. So why all the hysteria?

Freedom Of Speech Doesn't Apply To Those Who Are Saying What They Don't Want You To Hear

Remember when you were a kid, and if somebody told you something you didn't want to hear, such as it's time to go to bed, you would stick a finger in each ear and say "LaLalalalalalalalal" very loudly? It didn't work, because that very act alone told your parents that indeed it was time for you to go to sleep. Well, this is kind of like that. Jewish groups are asking member countries to stand up and walk out when Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses the U.N. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference on May 3.

“Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability poses a threat to the region and the entire Western world. To have President Ahmadinejad address this review conference makes a mockery of the efforts of many countries to prevent nuclear weapons and nuclear terrorism from becoming the gravest global threats of this century."

Mockery? Really? How about Israel deploring IAEA and UN calls for Israel to sign the NPT and join the IAEA while trying to simultaneously deciding whom that august body should and shouldn't be listening to?
The president and executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, the group that is calling for the boycott, then goes on to state that:"It is dismaying that, once again, the U.N. is allowing the head of a regime, foremost in the sponsorship of terrorism and the abuse of human rights, who defies U.N. resolutions regarding its nuclear ambitions, to appear before the international body."
Really? You want to go there? Israel, an apartheid state where it's Palestinian peoples are treated as second class citizens, where the Goldstone report has listed numerous war crimes and abuses of Human Rights, a country that has defied more UN resolutions than Iraq, and rejects UN resolutions regarding it's nuclear ambitions, and now you want to criticize Iran, which, once again has not diverted one isotope towards anything but it's nuclear energy program, nor has it been found to be developing a weapons program?
Which is likely what Ahmadinejad will be discussing at the conference, which is what pro-Israel groups do not want the world to hear. That and the fact the US has not lived up to it's obligations under Article 4 of the NNPT. It takes a special person to know what God wants, because God wants whatever that special person wants, ironically. Like the good Reverend Fred Phelps. Because God, and Fred, hates fags, that means that US soldiers die in Iraq (instead of being impervious to enemy bullets and bombs). The reasoning may specious, but when your followers are thick headed and dull, you can get them to believe anything.
And that's where religion comes from. In ancient times, any natural disaster could be attributed to a god that was in sync with whatever tribal leaders wanted. This tradition still carries on to this day among the faithful, with the damage inflicted on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina being explained by the Holiest of a-holes Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell blaming it on god's displeasure with the annual gay pride celebration taking place there. (Of course, when a tornado rips through a trailer park in the Bible Belt, these same people remain silent.) Of course, science has come along to explain why most of these occur, which is why the faithful revile science, because it shows them up as the dopes they are.
Natural disasters and such have always been harbingers of doom. Comets, for instance, have always foretold end times from Halley's Comet to the Heaven's Gate mass suicide to join the spacecraft following the Hale-Bopp comet. Earthquakes, such as the recent Haitian one, were attributed to a deity displeased with the locals consorting with devils hundreds of years ago. Even the recent eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland is now seen by some as a sign of the end times.
Following in that same ancient grand tradition of high priests attributing disasters to behavior displeasing to them, Rush Limbaugh, he of the Holy Viagra and Vicodin, High Priest of The Party of NO, has proclaimed the volcanic ash cloud from that same eruption as God's punishment for Health Care Reform. Who knew? God wants us all to get sick and die, the sooner we can join him in Heaven. Darn those Democrats for impeding the will of god!! (One could be just as specious and claim it was because the reform lacked any kind of public option) And now, the infamous doctor shopper will find it harder to break the law to get his prescription fix, I'm sure, and that's why his god is angry.
The volcanic ash has prevented President Obama from flying to Poland to attend that country's president's funeral. because, I guess, god doesn't want a Muslim attending a Christian burial service. In fact, all flights over Europe have been canceled, which is actually good for us, since most terrorists flying into this country depart from over there, thereby making us safer from further terrorists attacks. I swear, sometimes our whole political process has been taken over by a bunch of third graders. Republicans criticize Democrats, liberals hate conservatives and nobody notices that for the better part of the last century into this one, both parties have been running things. And with the exception of a few Jewish candidates here and there, for the most part, they have all been Christian. And what or where has that got us? Mired down in two never ending wars, rampant unemployment hidden by government figures, on the brink of a global depression, global warming, etc. All this polarized petty partisan bickering isn't solving anything. There's nothing civil about any of it. It's just name calling and blame throwing.

Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."
Of course, then all people heard was some self-important rock star claiming to be more bigger than Jesus, but that and some indiscriminate use of recreational drugs led the Vatican to condemn the Fab Four. But now, what with the half the clergy molesting children while the other half cover it up, drug use and boastful statements seem small, and so in a bid for forgiveness itself, The Vatican has forgiven John Lennon and the Beatles.
And hey, why not? The Beatles can't really be held responsible for their statements, they were under the influence of psychedelic drugs. And a Jewish manager. Why, did you know that this whole pedophile scandal and subsequent criticism of the church can be blamed on the Jews? I don't know how or when I discovered the craptions contest at Cracked.Com, but one thing I noticed when I did was the lack of funny material being offered up by the readers therein. Most of the jokes were of the FAIL/Lady Gaga/Gay variety, and few, if any, were anywhere near being humorous. Now, I consider myself to be a funny guy, so this seemed right up my alley.
The premise is this: the editors/administrators offer a picture and encourage readers to come up with a funny caption for it. The kind of stuff you may have done in high school, which is reflected in the mentality of many posts. Some people will use a catch phrase from a movie or Monty Python routine, whether or not it actually is funny in this situation. Then, once the phrase is offered, all registered users get to vote on it as being funny, and the one that garners the most votes over a twenty-four hour period is the winner.
The image below is one from last week, along with my submitted craption. Please note that the earlier you get your craption in, the more likely it will win, as the chance for others to see it is directly in conjunction with the number of votes it receives, because the ones with the higher votes are displayed at the top, along with the current vote leader. This particular submission by me was very popular, and didn't take long to rise to the top, where it was receiving the largest number of votes.

When I first viewed the picture, it reminded me of photos I had seen of the showers in Nazi Concentration Camps, where, once the gas was released, the victims would climb over each other to reach the fresh air at the top. Kind of like in this sculpture. So, connecting the two, I made my submission. By early evening, it was rapidly on it's way to becoming one of the highest vote-getters ever recorded. By nine o'clock, however, it was gone, deleted, deemed too offensive to readers who regularly use racist, homophobic and other disgusting words in an attempt to be funny.
What it meant was that the number two vote getter vaulted to the top, and while I voted for that one as well (Rapture gridlock), it didn't ease the sting of my loss. So, the very next day, regardless of the picture, I submitted the following craption
"Yeah, I was going to post some thing funny here, but the Thought Police Nazis at Cracked.Com would just delete it". Once again, it rose quickly to the number two position. And, once again, by nine o'clock, it was gone. But, even more disappointing, so was my profile at Cracked.Com. I had been banned from ever writing craptions, or voting on others craptions as well. I really think that a humor magazine web site would have a sense of humor, but I guess I was wrong. FAIL!

It's A McCain Thing, You Wouldn't Understand, But Then, Neither Does He

Arizona senator and former Republican presidential candidate told Newsweek recently "I never considered myself a maverick".
What McCain appparently considered considering himself was a Jeep, so he could appropriate "It's a McCain thing, you wouldn't understand", until an aide told him Jeep was a registered trademark of the Daimler-Chrysler Corporation.
"What I really meant to say," the mentally faltering politican stated, "was that I'm a 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger. Vroom!"
Aside from the missing McCain maverick meme, also conspicuous in it's absence was one-time Republican political operative Joe "Remember Me?" The Plumber Wurzelbacher who doesn't want anything to do with Sen. McCain. "He messed up my life," Wurzelbacher claimed, "Made me record a shitty country music album, ghost wrote my book then told people not to buy it, told me not to pay $1,182 in taxes to the state of Ohio, and cock blocked me when I was trying to nail Sarah Palin." So much for personal responsibility.
Of course, being a maverick means that sometimes you vote with the opposition, and in these days of super-mega-hyper-polarized politics, that doesn't fly. So, at the risk of looking more ridiculous than he looked two years ago, McCain has once again lost himself in his quest for office.

Jesus has given us many things. The brightly colored eggs and jellybeans of Easter. The bright lights on evergreen trees surrounded by colorfully wrapped presents of Christmas.

And, of course, the Rapture. The Rapture is an interpretation of the Bible by dispensationalists who feel that certain things must happen in order for Christians to be lifted up to the Heavens (good riddance) and the rest of the world to live in peace, but is never mentioned in the Bible. It Would Be Better If We Paid You No Mind At All

One of the greatest problems facing our country is the fact that our foreign policy is decided on not what's best for America, but instead, on what's not best for America.
Take stark raving neocon Billy Kristol. He claims it would be better for the US to attack Iran than Israel. Better for Israel, that is. Ultimately, it would be better for no one to attack Iran, since they actually haven't been found to be doing thing which violates any law, but reasoning with a neocon is impossible, because they make their own reality, and insane people are impossible to rationalize with in any debate.
Kristol, it should be noted, was one the loudest voices calling for an attack against Iraq, but there's no use beating that dead horse. He is probably the last person anyone should listen to regard US foreign policy in the Middle East, but it doesn't stop the corporate media from putting him on anyway.
But there is a whole list of things that it would be better for America to do first.
As an example, it would be better if the US government would stop breaking it's own laws, and obey the Symington Amendment. The fact that both major parties seem to disregard this law is an apt illustration of why we need to dump them both in favor of a party that actually obeys laws instead of bowing to powerful lobbies.
It would be better if politicians ran as a friend of all Americans instead of as a friend of another country. The US should not be playing favorites with any country in the Middle east, especially one with so many UN violations against it.
It would be better for the US, already mired down in two wars-without-end, to not start a third one that will endanger more of our troops and cause the loss of more American lives. It would be better for the US not to be seen as an agressor in a region where many people already have developed a negative opinion of us. It would be better if we didn't needlessly harm more civilians tha the over one million Iraqis we have already killed in a genocide designed to calm Billy Kristol's paranoia.
The cost of the Iraq War is already three trillion dollars, another war in the region isn't going to be any cheaper. It would be better for the US if that money, on top of the $1.6 trillion in aid were reinvested in this country to rebuild our economy.
And in the end, it would be better for Mr. Kristol, wealthy publisher of The Weakly Standard and paid Fox News commentator, to buy his own fighter jet and fly it over to Iran himself. But unfortunately, Mr. Kristol hasn't met a war somebody else's kids lives couldn't be spent fighting so Mr. Kristol continue to be a drain on society by advocating US involvement in wars it would be better off not fighting.

There is also a deliberate building up of two camps that benefits from whipping up home team spirit and demonizing the opposition. With the Internet there is even more fractioning since we are in echo chambers. With so much propaganda it is hard to calm down enough to listen. Of course, you can't talk to a wingtard; They all watch and believe Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They never had a problem with the Patriot Act, or Guantanamo Bay, or 'enhanced interrogation' techniques under Bush, it's only when President Obama continues them that they worry about Fascism. I was basically saying don’t sit around waiting for the two corrupted established parties to restore the Constitution or the Republic. The founding generation was birthed by the rabble of all walks of life that got fed up and did risky things because they were captivated by the breath of liberty. There is a looming oligarchy and it is up to the people to organize a grassroots movement and push back. Wait a minute! Case in point: Cindy Sheehan, arrested in Saturday's antiwar march marking the seven year anniversary of the illegal US invasion of Iraq may be tried for her campaign. Huh? What? Even the Cheney/Bush administration was smart enough to know that trying a mother grieving over the loss of her son in a pointless unending war would make her a martyr, President Obama was supposed to be smarter than that.
Let's see, teabaggers can protest all they want, hurl invectives and slurs at members of Congress, and they go unpunished. But make a point about the senseless cost of war, and well, it's off to the hoosegow with you.
Of course this was the same Obama campaign that promised talks with Iran without any preconditions Now we have increased calls by members of the administration as well as members of congress for tougher sanctions against Iran. You know, sanctions like we had had with Iraq. And like Iraq, the propaganda has started against Iran. Now we have the US army claiming that Taliban fighters are training in Iran. Never mind that Shi'ite Iran and Sunni Taliban can't even agree on how to run a theocracy, the important point is that the military now has an excuse for it's poor performance in the never ending war in Afghanistan and the corporate media has a new scare to wave at the television watchers.

Whether you think the US is a democracy or a republic, the truth is it's neither, we no longer have any form of representative government at all.
Exhibit A, the "health care reform". While most Americans support fixing our health care system, offering a medicare buy in and a public option, what we are getting is the individual mandate, a law designed to line the pockets of the health insurance industry. Capitalism sucks bad enough, but when you force uninsured citizens to buy a product from a private concern rather than a government entity, you have taken another step towards the corpocracy.
Exhibit B, war with Iran. Most Americans don't want us to undertake another military confrontation, we haven't made any progress with the two we're already mired in. War with Iran will costs us more money, more lives, and more at the gas pump. Last time gas prices topped $4.00 a gallon, the economy went into a tailspin, another period of high gas prices and you might as well start stocking up on pencils to sell on Wall Street. Aha, you say, but we're not at war with Iran yet. Yet, of course, being the operative word in that statement. Because, you see, next week is the Aip[ac conference and this year, the lobby has built its annual conference, and its entire lobbying agenda around the issue of Iran. I know, I know, Iran actually hasn't done anything wrong, per se, but that didn't stop the US from invading Iraq, so what makes you think Iran will be any different. Well, you say, the Democratic party was given control of congress and the White House by progressives Americans opposed to the ongoing wars. And since that time, the party has done absolutely nothing to end either quagmire. In fact President Obama has even crossed the border of Afghanistan into Pakistan (well not, President Obama himself, of course), so you could even say he has increased the Pax Americana of the Bush administration. And with that in mind, there's no reason he wouldn't continue that Bush administration policy of the US military as the world's police force by bombing Iran for doing something that is well with in it's rights as both a sovereign nation as well as a signee to the NNPT.
So there you have it, two pieces of evidence that our representatives don't represent us at all. Instead, we have a bunch of jokers who sole purpose in life seems to be to grow fat off the public tit (ever see a skinny senior congressperson?) while doing the work of everybody save their constituency. It's become the new American dream.

Let it be said that although I voted for Barack Obama, I have to this date not been happy with his performance thus far. He has spent too much time looking for a "bipartisan" solution instead of doing what needs to be done. The opposition party has left him out to dry because they only know how to create more problems and not solve them. The problems now facing this country were not brought in by President Obama when he took office, they were there already before he was even elected.
The health care crisis has been going on for twenty years, much of it with Republican control of Congress, and they have done nothing because they don't understand that it's not the quality of car offered by the finest doctors in the world, it's the inaccessibility for millions of Americans due to lack of insurance, or, for those with insurance, the inability to receive the care they need because their providers have denied it to them after taking their money.
In fact, if you named every problem facing the US and it can be directly traced back to the previous administration and it's inability to govern. President Obama is just the person who has to be the adult and fix these problems while the robber barons and banksters sit on their pile of money counting every dime they have ripped off from the US taxpayers.
So when Michael "Savage" Weiner says President Obama ripped the country in half in only one year, I would have to disagree. No, it was the people such as Michael Weiner, the Glenn Becks and their ilk who decided that they didn't like having a black and Democratic president in the White House that have ripped this country apart.
President Obama didn't create the huge deficit, it was there when he got there and people like Michael Weiner cheered on the previous administration as they poured money down the outhouse in wars of choice such as Iraq. Michael Weiner cheered as former President Bush mismanaged the war in Afghanistan, dragging that conflict out longer than any other war we have been involved in. Where were the Michael savages and Glenn Becks and other tea baggers when those cesspools were opened up for our tax dollars to be poured endlessly into?
The reality is, the country has been ripped apart for some time now. It's been nearly seven years now that President Bush unilaterally violated international law and invaded a sovereign nation with no just cause. There were lots of protests, the "liberal" media chose to ignore them, and the "free speech zones" created by the criminal-in-chief insured he'd never become aware of them, neither would you, Mr. Weiner, or the American people. And sometimes, he has to go back, way back, almost twenty five years, before he can find something for himself to get himself into a tizzy over.
Case in point: Bruce Springsteen's song, 'Born In The USA', is anti American. No fucking shit. Well, it's not as anti-American as much as it is critical of a system that creates endless wars, inescapable debt, corporate prisons and no hope for working people. And it's the same song that twenty five years ago the sainted Ronald Reagan wanted to use as his campaign theme song. And now he just listened to the lyrics? Good thing he's not in charge of Homeland Security.
It's all part of the ongoing class war where the haves criticize the have-nots for not being happy with the crumbs they are being offered. Everything Beck rails against, health care reform, social and economic justice, are all the concerns of the people who work hard and are compensated poorly for their sweat. All so a useless corporate shill like Beck can interpret twenty-five year old rock music written by musicians opposed to the repressive agenda of the corporatocracy.

Today at work, I was told by a customer that if I did not offer a fish entree tomorrow, I was going to Hell.
Sure, I thought, right after I visit the Merry Old Land of Oz.
For centuries the church has been a source of brainwashing of it's followers, from "don't eat meat on Friday during Lent" to "don't vote for a homosexual baby killer Democrat". It's worked because, as George Carlin once said, once you get people to believe in an invisible man in the sky, you can get them to believe anything. As long as it's approved by by Glenn Beck.
So if your church begins to preach the teachings of Jesus Christ, you know love thy neighbors, and all that crap that Christians rarely take to heart, "run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!". (Don't worry, Glenn. Your magic underwear will protect you from thoughts of social and economic justice.)
Now we see the rights plans laid bare: they oppose justice in any form. The social programming language of capitalist authoritarianism seeks to activate personal greed, intellectual insecurity and visceral racism as motivators of guided popular political reaction. So even though the basis for Christianity is kindness and sharing, if your pastor mentions social or economic justice, he's a commie. Or a Nazi. All you really need to know, beyond the philosophical disparity between the two, is Glenn Beck has done the thinking for you, and has decided that they're both really bad. And besides, those people who call for economic and social justice are, you know, those people. And if those people are in your church, better run as fast as you can, because there is no difference between, say, the Lutherans and the Baptists. Really.

Endless War In A Service Economy

Growing up, my Grandfather had a cabin in Northern Michigan, on an inland lake, a log cabin he had built himself. On one corner of his property was a trailer, a two-wheeled trailer, with the axle in the center and some sort of railing around it, used for hauling wood from the forest, or garbage to the dump. When it was parked, and empty, one end stuck up in the air while the other touched the ground, much the way a see-saw looks when nobody's riding it. As children, we would stand at the lower end of the trailer and run up towards the high end, until that fell with a crash, and we were on the low end again, which caused us to laugh.
It's kind of like our political system. While at the edges, there are those who are doggedly right or left, liberal or conservative, Republican or Democratic, the bulk of American voters run from on side to the other. After several years of Bush cutting taxes and increasing spending started to put a damper on things, voters, the same voters who had voted Bush and Republican previously, ran to high end of the trailer, hoping that the Democrats would change things. Like they had promised. And while the system sank deeper into the shit, those on the right cynically asked "How's all that hope and change working out for ya? To which I reply, about as well as your cynicism and stagnation are working out for you, but I digress.
But as voters run from one side to the other, nobody seems to notice they're not getting anywhere. Things aren't getting better. There getting worse. The party we have chosen as leaders have decided they don't want to do anything that isn't bi-partisan. I guess they don't want to take the blame if things go wrong. The other party is offering nothing new, the same old tax-cuts-and increased-spending solution.
Our time is coming soon. Our schools are running out of funding. Our states are falling deeper into debt. Some can't even pay your income tax refund. Our politicians, both parties, have traded our future for endless war in a service economy. A lot of them are walking away this year, with a pension and a lifetime of free medical care. Most of them into a lobbying position with some mega-corporation that hasn't stolen enough from us. And what will we do about it?
Run to the higher end of the trailer, of course.

Tne Unbrainwashed 2010 Academy Awards Pick For Best Picture

I have a general disdain for awards shows. I don't care what celebrities are wearing to draw attention to themselves and away from more deserving entities. I'm not big on production numbers nor the comedy stylings of Bruce Vilanch. I don't really care which actor or actress wins a statuette.
That being said, this is a prediction of what I think will win the best picture award, but what I think SHOULD win the best picture. I say this because I know that the academy voters have passed on nominated movies such as Fargo and Pulp Fiction to give the best picture to lesser, weaker, stupider movies.
And, this year, with the academy nominating ten pictures instead of the usual five, I feel very good that I have actually seen over half the nominated films. Most years, I'm lucky to see one.
Avatar-This movie was groundbreaking in the visual effects department. But a Snickers bar on a silver platter is still a Snickers bar. Besides the predictability of the plot line and the stock cliche characters, it wasn't even that good of a story. I don't think it will win, and I don't think it should, either.
The Blind Side-This is one of those weepy feel-good movies. Usually they win, because Hollywood likes being manipulated as much as the rest of the people. I haven't seen it, because I'm not a fan of sports movies or Sandra Bullock. And I don't think it should win.
District 9-I liked this picture. It's visual effects could and plot line should have taught James Cameron that money and technology isn't everything. But as much as I liked it, I don't think it was the best picture I've seen this year. Or last year.
An Education-Another British period piece costume drama. Usually these win. I haven't seen it. And even if it does pull an upset, I don't think I ever would.
The Hurt Locker-I'm not too fond of propaganda pieces. At least Katherine Bigelow's ex-husband had the sense to make the occupying force the bad guys and the insurgency the good guys. It was a compelling piece of work, still, not the best film I saw last year.
Inglorious Basterds-Quentin Tarantino has made a lot of good movies. Some of them have been nominated for Oscars and lost to lesser films. I found this film to have too many slow and dull parts for me. Still, if it pulled an upset, I wouldn't be.
Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire-Boy, there's mouthful in a title. Couldn't just call it Push or Precious, could they? There are some movies I wouldn't mind seeing win, just to insure that the Sandra Bullock movie doesn't. I haven't seen this one, but if it does win, I might feel compelled to check it out at sometime, but a lot of it seems like what I live around everyday.
A Serious Man-The Coen Brothers. Someday, this will rank up there with their other cult classics like Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou, and my all time favorite Miller's Crossing. (No Country For Old Men being somewhat of an anomaly as it's based on outside work)Still, as big of a Coen Bros fan as I am, I cannot say this was the best picture I saw that was produced last year.
UP-The people at Pixar know what they're doing. They have yet to make a truly awful movie, which is made more amazing since they have become part of Disney. This is almost a shoo-in to win Best Animated Feature, but really, most of Avatar is as computer generated as this movie, but this has a better storyline. It has the best score of any of the movies I've seen, and it has the most heart. It's not maudlin like some Sandra Bullock weeper, it's not as manipulative either. In short, it is the best picture that I saw last year, and if this were a perfect world (and if it were, I'm sure I would find some minuscule fault with it), Up would win the Oscar for best picture.
Up In The Air-The only movie on this list that I haven't seen, but, win or lose, would still wish to, it seems like a movie I might enjoy. The trailer looked good, but so did the trailer for The Men Who Stare At Goats, which I did see, but did not get nominated for an award. And it's theme of corporate downsizing is timely as well. As sure as I am of it being a good movie, I am sure that UP is better.
So there you are. I'm sure many people will disagree with about UP, but, hey, that's why we have a comments section. What are your picks? Or do you care less about this than I?

I'll admit to being a fan of The Office. One of my favorite episodes is when Michael Scott(Steve Carrell) attends an improv class, and every skit he's involved in ends up with him pointing his finger like a gun and "shooting" his class mates, until, out of frustration, his teacher tells him he can no longer use his "gun" in class.
So it was with some amusement that I read about a kindergartner suspended making a gun with his hand. At first, I thought, how ridiculous. Little boys have been doing this for years, and it's not like his finger is going to go off and accidentally shoot some one. It's just another example of the overprotective politically correct nanny state taking it out on some poor little boy. But then I read more:

School officials allege Mason had displayed this kind of behavior for several months, despite numerous warnings."

Jammer's mother, Erin Jammer, received a warning about it Friday, and spoke with him about it.Here's where the problem for me begins. The school contacted little Mason's mother about this and she did nothing to stop the problem. You see, I'm all for pretend gun ownership, but when you start pointing your finger gun at other people, that's when other people's right to not have a finger gun pointed at them becomes more important. And if your child's school contacts you about a problem with your son at school, it's your responsibility to act like a parent and make sure the problem is solved.
I pity poor Mason Jammer. He's not going to go far in life because his parents have refused to engage him at an early age and teach him the qualities that make a good human being. Instead, they have left it up to the already overburdened public school system so they can spend more time watching Judge Judy, playing on Farmville or any number of things that WT do when they should be imparting what little if any wisdom they have to their offspring. He likes to condemn things.
He condemns movies and television shows that might cause his followers to think.
He condemns advertising that relays messages that he doesn't agree with.
He condemns the use of condoms.

Recently, he condemned the meeting of officials from the Justice and Health and Human Services departments with representatives of the Secular Coalition for America, an umbrella group that includes American Atheists and the Council for Secular Humanism.
He denounced them as a 'hate group'.
A definition of 'condemn' is " to pronounce judgment against, to sentence". In other words, to hate.
Oddly enough, Mr. Donohue has never condemned pedophiliac priests. Because his bible says, 'judge not, lest ye be judged'.

The job of the corporate media in our society is to keep people so pumped full of fear that reason steps out the door and illogic prevails. Remember last fall, when fears of an H1N1 pandemic were relayed by the news media? People lined up and waited for flu shots and cursed the government for not producing enough to keep them safe when they couldn't get one immediately.
But, like Saddam's weapons of mass destruction, the pandemic never occurred, and now with the flu season almost at an end, it doesn't appear that we will have one this year.
This fear is nothing new. Ever since the dawn of the atomic age, fear has been used to sell us everything from mouthwash, deodorant, and shampoo to multi-billion dollar nuclear weapons defense systems. It's a formula that hasn't failed capitalism yet, because it works so effectively.
And it works to this day. How else can you explain the fact that 71% of Americans think Iran has the "bomb"? They don't of course, but the disinformation and misinformation that has flowed from both our corporate political sources as well as the "librul" media has convinced the majority of Americans that something that doesn't exist actually does. A nuclear boogeyman from a country that has called for total nuclear disarmament. Up is down, black is white and the stimulus is working.
Even though our own intelligence sources say that there are no nuclear weapons in Iran, a full 25% think we should bomb them right now!. That's right around the number of people who still identify themselves with the Republican Party. Yes, we should start another war because the ones we're fighting now are going along nicely.
I mean, that's not enough time, but when I see Susan Rice on the news stating that Iran hasn't lived up to it's expectations concerning it's nuclear program, well, as a co-signer of the NNPT, neither has the US. Instead of threatening them with sanctions, are duty is to ensure that they are able to develop nuclear power with co-operation, and assistance. That would be too sensible. First we have to blast them to smithereenies, then the taxpayers can pay to rebuild the entire country again.
Provided, of course, they are led to believe that they can.

Plus, he never got married, had sex, or was romantically linked to a female. Elton John was a major music superstar in the seventies who was also one of the first to publicly declare their gayness. So I'm assuming he has a finely tuned gaydar.
The Catholic League, protector of all things Jesus, responded with their own ludicrousity:"to call Jesus a homosexual is to label him a sexual deviant".

President Barack Obama took Tuesday a major bet on nuclear power, announcing eight billion dollars in loan guarantees to build the first new plant on US soil in nearly 30 years.
Uh, hello?
The United States has endless amounts of coal, all we have to do is blow the top off a couple of mountains, and there it is, ready for the taking. Not only that, but we can harvest the wind as well, that's a clean and unlimited source of energy as well. especially around Washington DC, where right and left wing wind bags are always blowing. So why build nuclear power plants?
Does this mean we're going to impose sanctions on ourself? Perhaps the Israeli premier will travel to Russia to push for crippling sanctions against the US.
No?
Well, despite the fact that there's no credible evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program, even with Secretary of State Clinton putting Iran in the impossible position of proving a negative, the push to punish Iran for doing the same thing that President Obama just announced plans to do seems a tad....hypocritical. Did I say a tad? I meant overwhelmingly hypocritical.

I have a lot of idiosyncrasies that bother me, but my biggest pet peeve is bad spelling. I have on occasion let a few slip by, if only because I've had disagreements with my spellcheck, I'm not going to let some machine tell me I can't invent words, or compound them, dammit, I'm a professional writer. Nothing makes a person look stupid than a misspelled word.
This goes back to former VP Dan Quayle and his inability to spell the simplest of words. I was working with a Dittohead at the time, and they insisted there was nothing wrong with the next in line to be leader of the "free" world being too stupid to know how to spell a tuber. (I am now Facebook friends with the guy and have noticed numerous misspellings in his status updates, the latest being "comming", and no, he didn't mean that)

America is supposed to be a Union, but right now, it is about as divided as a nation can be. Our political system has failed because a servant cannot serve two masters at once. They can not placate the people who elected them while simultaneously placating the special interests that funded their election. This has led to a top-down lack of leadership, as politicians walk a tightrope between what they have pledged to voters and what their financiers will let them accomplish.
Our country has now fractured and divided it self into many different groups, each with a represent belief system that appears like insanity to those outside of it. The birthers, for instance, in spite of evidence to the contrary being presented, still believe that President Obama was not born in Hawaii, but rather some distant African nation, thereby leaving him unqualified to hold the office for which he was elected. The Tea party, as another example, believe that taxes are too high and government spending is out of control, yet refuse to give up pouring money into the quagmires of Iraq and Afghanistan, and actually believe we should spend more money in places like Pakistan, Yemen, and Iran.
Then there are the Truthers, people who do not believe in the official government conspiracy theory for 9/11. Since 84% of the American people do not believe what the government has told us about 9/11, that makes them a majority. And it also means that despite a mountain of evidence contrary to the 'official' conspiracy theory, Truthers are the crazies and people who believe that 19 Saudi men (7 of whom are amazingly still alive), hijacked planes that they could barely fly through the most secure airspace in the world crashing them into steel frame buildings, causing fires that impossibly caused the steel to melt despite the presence of asbestos in the towers, and was so devastating that a building untouched by the jets collapsed are considered to be normal and sane.
Our government lies to us all the time. They lied about we needed to go into Iraq and why we need to bomb Iran. They lie about the unemployment rate and tell us recovery is happening when it isn't. It doesn't matter if you put a Republican or a Democrat in power, they still are prepared to lie to us to cover up corporate interests.
And if that makes me some sort of truther, I can live with that.

At last Saturday's Tea party convention, professional political harpy Sarah Palin asked, mockingly, "How's that hope-y change-y thing working out for ya?", barely paraphrasing a right wing talking point from last summer. This and her eventual outrage at Rahm Emmanuel's "fucking retards" of last summer, illustrate how slow her reaction time is, as well as how out of touch she is with events going on around her.
The truth is, there is no "change-y" thing. While President Obama may have stated "even greater cooperation and understanding between nations" in his inaugural address, he has since hinted that he may go the George Bush/Dick Cheney route of unilateral action against Iran. Hell, we have them circled now, it's only a matter of time before a justification miraculously occurs, and them bombs start flying and people start dying. So other than the obvious reasons, how is Obama any different than you, Sarah Palin?
We know why the tea partiers hate President Obama so much, despite his continuation of Bush/Cheney policies. So continue to criticize him for doing things you would have backed had your party won the election. You don't seem bitter to me at all. America will always be better off without people like you who have to be reminded to lift America's spirit!

Tea Baggers, Terrorists and the Mob Mentality

Glenn Greenwald ran a post about how readily people accept what they are told, especially by our leaders. Essentially, the government claims that it can now kill anyone, even Americans overseas, by deeming them terrorists with out any due process. That whole "constitution" thing went out with the Patriot Act. And that people who may have opposed it's usage by the previous administration have no problem with President Obama making similar declarations. Much the same way the charges of socialist and communist are leveled at an obvious corporatist like our president by those on the right because they feel uncomfortable being led by someone with a darker skin tone, despite any empirical evidence.
On the right, the same thing is happening to the Tea Party movement. What began as a Libertarian anti tax movement in Chicago in 2008 has mushroomed and metamorphosed into a another arm of the Republican Party, being told to embrace the policies of that party or risk losing support from the movement itself. And while some (read the comments) may resist, the mob mentality will eventually grab hold and the GOP knows it can count on the support of those who while not ideologically aligned with Sarah Palin, will feel she is a better choice than another term of President Obama. For obvious and previously stated reasons.
It's the same mentality that has changed a championship game between the AFL and the NFL (now both the NFC and AFC arms of the NFL) 45 years ago into what is quickly becoming the national holiday. In these times of green thinking, how many of these plastic party supplies will end up rotting in a landfill? While some people will watch to root on their favorite team, more people will watch the Super Bowl for the ads than the game, which in a time of DVRs, is quite a trick on the part of advertisers. And a sign of sickness infecting the mob mentality, turning most of a nation into drunken drooling zombies, turning their memories into advertisements, their minds into pliable mush for the coming corporate state.

Poor Ted Nugent. He's really upset that he doesn't realize that his music is irrelevant, or maybe his music is so irrelevant that he has to resort to making patented "outrageous" statements to get any press these days.
Mr. Nugent, famous for that one song, you know, the one that all the classic rock stations play, I think Meat Loaf sings it, let fly with said statements in an interview with culture magazine Royal Flush, a magazine that boasts a circulation of 50,000 people which, while slightly higher than the readership of this blog, is still spit in the ocean compared to real publications.
Terrible Ted says that "Barack Hussein Obama should be put in jail. It is clear that Barack Hussein Obama is a communist." So, now we should jail people for their political beliefs? The only thing that the racist "Nuge" hates about President Obama, is the fact that he's black.
Terrible Ted then goes on to list a number of people he feels should die. Pam Anderson, Bill Maher, people who step on his lawn, animal rights activists, and vegans. But most of his rage is directed towards Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner for "Jann Wenner won’t do a story on my sold-out tour this year because I’m on the board of directors at the NRA. Jann Wenner should die." Sold out tour? Really? I live in the heart of his happy hunting ground home state of Michigan, where every appearance he makes is covered incessantly by the local crass, er, classic rock stations, and I didn't hear a word about any tour, let alone about it being 'sold out', and since I don't believe The "Nuge" has the drawing power to fill any arena/stadium outside of Michigan, I'm sure his tour consisted of small clubs, bars and dives where alcohol soaked brains clamor for the music it remembers from a time before most the brain cells were killed by alcohol consumption.
But, really, Ted Nugent is a pussy. Given a chance back in the sixties to fulfill his anti-communist zeal and kill as many as he wanted, Nugent chickened out, and got a draft deferment. You see, the difference between shooting animals and shooting communists is that animals aren't armed with weapons trying to kill you back. Most animals just want to co-exist with their dwindling surroundings, so it's easy to sneak up on them and shoot them in the back like a coward.
So, since Mr. Nugent is unable to compose a good song on his own that might generate some airplay, or develop his stagnant guitar style which hasn't evolved since "Wango Tango", his only other alternative is to behave like a neanderthal jackass in order to draw attention to his narrow and twisted political beliefs.
Ted made a lot of money in the sixties and seventies extolling the virtues of the whole "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" lifestyle, now has the gall to criticize those poor souls who made Nugent rich taking the message to heart by becoming too incompetent to work and having far too many babies than they can afford. Ted, that makes you a fucking hypocrite, and as I have become fond of saying, you cant spell fucking hypocrite with out the GOP, of which Nugent is one of the few people left on the right willing to identify themselves with that party.
So, go ahead Ted, and blame your political affiliations for your "lack of press coverage", the truth is Ted, you are a talentless hack who lost his audience when they sobered up enough to realize just how badly you suck. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you can concentrate your attention on the one thing you do that makes you any money. Killing creatures not evolved enough to fire weapons back at you.

Is the US government trying to kill it's own people? According to congressional hearings held on January 27 of this year US intelligence agencies shielded the Christmas Day "underwear bomber" and stopped the State Department from revoking his Visa. It's strange that this story wasn't covered in the unbiased corporate media, after all, Fox News has been working overtime to embarrass the Obama administration, and this wold have been a perfect opportunity for them to do so.
So when intelligence chiefs warn of another attack "soon", is this wishful thinking, or prior knowledge of another operative allowed to slip through to justify military action somewhere else in the Middle East?

Apparently, Tony Blair Thinks He Has Some Credibility Left

In the run-up to Iraq War, then-British Prime Minister became known in certain circles as "Bush's Poodle", or "Phony Tony" because of his unequivocal support for the Bush(Cheney) administration's unilateral decision to violate international law and invade Iraq. Besides the Downing Street Minutes, there was the whole 'Dodgy Dossier' which even it's author states was wrong. What's more, Blair's recent refusal to apologize has hurt his party's chances in upcoming elections.
So now, with the US beefing up it's military presence in the Persian Gulf, Blair is claiming that's it's up to the world to halt Iran's nuclear program. Well, Mr. Poodle, I mean, Blair, the IAEA has yet to find that Iran is doing anything but building an nuclear reactor for anything other than peaceful purposes. So whom am I to trust? A proven liar with an agenda, or an independent international watchdog agency? If Phony Tony Baloney wants to squander what precious little political capital he has left on questionable intelligence, good luck with that. Just remember, one day when you cry 'wolf', a lot of people are just going to think poodle, and ignore you.
